Rocky View Gravel Watch

Rocky View Gravel Watch Rocky View County residents concerned about the effects of gravel extraction. Burnco failed in 1992 and re-applied in 1994 and was successful on Burma road.

Residents who believe gravel extraction requires sound policy that protect residents and considers their health and safety first and foremost. This group had its origins with the "Concerned Citizens" Organziation which was formed in 1992 to resist the establishment of the Burnco and Consolidated gravel extraction operations near where people already lived. Consolidated (later became Inland) tried

in 1994 also on Burma Road and was not successful (6-3 against). It then purchased additional lands including all that around a key-hole cup-de-sac of 4 acre properties that was severed in 1978 known as Crestview Estates. It then applied again in 2010 for a 600 acre extraction facility with the Berm starting at the Crestview property line. This operation would have had the second largest yearly output in Canada. After a lengthy hearing, it was voted down by the Rocky View Council. In January of 2016, it signalled that it intended another application. Multiple and frequent applications are possible under the Albert's Municipal Government Act. Also our government allows ridiculously low municipal tax assessments that enable gravel companies, land speculators and developers to incur very low carrying costs on land. Gravel, in Alberta, is regarded as a surface resource and is therefore regulated by the municipalities through their land use policies.
