Over the last weekend, members from the Poplar River Mine Emergency Response Team went to Saskatoon to compete in the 56th annual SMA provincial competition. There are also two members from the Rockglen Fire Department on this team. There were a total of 19 teams from mines all over Saskatchewan, with 8 of them being surface mines and 11 coming from underground mines. These pictures show a few of the specialized skills that these teams are trained to do. They are judged on their ability to complete each scenario in a timely and safe manner. There are scenarios that include high-angle rope rescue, confined space rescues, firefighting with fire extinguishers, structural search and rescue, and motor vehicle extrication, just to name a few.

It has been a very busy week already for our firefighters. This morning at 6:32 Rockglen Fire Department got called out again for a vegetation/grass fire east of Rockglen, that was reportedly started by a downed power line.

This afternoon at 13:50 the department got called again for a rekindle from the fire this morning.

The Rockglen Fire department was called out to a ditch fire ten miles west of Rockglen along Highway 2 at 15:05 on Sunday, May 24th. The cause of the fire is unknown, but it is most likely a spark from a vehicle passing by. It is extremely dry already, so please make sure you have everything strapped onto your loads and aren't dragging anything while driving down highways or grid roads, and dispose of ci******es in a proper manner.

Last night, at approximately 19:21 pm, the Rockglen Fire Department was called out to a mobile home fire. We are fairly certain that the fire started at this electrical plug. The plug was exposed to extreme heat all throughout the day, being on the south side of the unit. Luckily, a passerby (who is a member of the fire department) is always on the lookout for anything out of the ordinary, spotted the smoke, and called it in immediately. We were able to extinguish the fire with little loss, thanks to the passerby. This is just another reminder that fires can happen when you least expect it, especially in this dry heat we are having.

Please be aware of the conditions if you are having fires! It’s May 3rd and a big part of the province is already in the extreme portion of the fire weather index, including us! (If you are unaware of what the FWI is just read on the picture).

Immediate Fire Risks

* Dry grass and crop stubble can ignite extremely fast—even from a tiny spark
* High winds can turn a small fire into an uncontrollable grassfire in minutes
* Hot equipment (ATVs, trucks, chains) can easily start fires in dry conditions
* Discarded ci******es or campfires can spread before you even notice

Property & Community Impact

* Fires can quickly threaten homes, shops, and farm buildings
* Loss of crops, pasture, and livestock feed
* Damage to fencing, equipment, and infrastructure
* Can put entire communities at risk, not just one property

Rockglen fire department got dispatched this morning for a 2 vehicle collision around 8:30am between scout lake and liseux. The roads look fine in some areas but others have lots of snow blown onto the highway. Please be careful if you have to go out on the roads today!

🔥 Controlled Burn Reminder – Rockglen Fire Department 🔥

As spring cleanup gets underway, the Rockglen Volunteer Fire Department would like to remind everyone planning a controlled burn to please call it in before lighting up.

In Saskatchewan, all controlled burns should be reported to the provincial burn notification line. This helps prevent unnecessary emergency responses and ensures our crews are available for real emergencies.

📞 Controlled Burn Line: 1-866-404-4911

Before burning, please make sure:✔️ Weather conditions are safe (low wind, no fire bans in effect)✔️ You have proper tools and water on hand✔️ The fire is attended at all times✔️ The burn is fully extinguished before leaving

Taking a minute to call ahead can prevent a full fire department response 🚒

We appreciate your cooperation in helping keep the Rockglen area safe!
