As temperatures rise and we begin enjoying the outdoors again, Riverton-Bifrost Fire Department would like to remind everyone to be Fire Smart.

At this time, there are currently no fire restrictions in place. However, last year’s wildfire season showed just how quickly conditions can change and how devastating uncontrolled fires can become across our province.

If you are planning to have a fire on your property, please contact the Municipal Office to obtain a fire permit. 204-376-2391.

If you are planning to have a backyard fire, please ensure it is contained to an approved fire pit, never leave it unattended, and fully extinguish it when finished. Avoid burning during windy conditions and always keep a water source nearby.

By taking a few simple precautions, we can all do our part to help prevent another severe wildfire season in Manitoba.

Stay safe, stay responsible, and help keep our community protected.

The importance of having working smoke detectors

The importance of having working smoke detectors

PLEASE READ

HFD was dispatched at 5:17am to a possible fire in a structure. The homeowners were woken up by their smoke detector sounding. Initially thinking the batteries were low, but the chirping persisted. The homeowners evacuated the home and met us outside.

After an extensive search, HFD identified a hotspot in the bathroom ceiling. After breaching the ceiling, it was clear that there has been a slow burning fire throughout the trusses and supports in the roofline. The cause… we suspect a lightning strike!!⚡️

A second crew went up on the roof and found the entry point of the lightning strike, directly above the bathroom.

This is one of those stories that had there not been a witness, no one would believe it. And this is a story worth sharing!

And this is an important message to having working smoke detectors!! The smoke detector, directly outside the bathroom and in the hallway outside the bedrooms, started to chirp even without visible smoke or flames. The only indication was a smell of smoke. With the quick action of the homeowners to call 9-1-1, we were able to extinguish and contain it. If they continued to believe it was low battery, it may have been too late by the time HFD arrived.

Please test your smoke detectors today!🔥🚒

With the winds, it is not recommended to conduct any burning today.

Yesterday, an 8 yr old youth started 2 fires at 2 businesses around Riverton. Thankfully, other people seen them both before they got out of hand and safely extinguished them. Hopefully, his talk with our Fire Chief on the dangers of his actions will prevent him from doing this again.

We will be conducting a controlled burn along Thompson Drive and along the River today. Please be careful when passing through
