Regular pruning is important for the health of our trees, and now is your last chance to get those elm trees pruned before the pruning ban takes effect.

From April 1 to August 31, there is a province-wide ban in place prohibiting pruning elm trees when elm beetle species are most active. Please do your part to help prevent the spread of Dutch elm disease.

We will begin with the basics of working with native plant seeds, including when and how to collect, clean, and save them. Key principles of landscape design will be discussed, with a focus on creating attractive spaces that work well in urban settings. In addition, the presentation will discuss the pros and cons of adding native grasses into the landscape. Participants will learn the best times of year to plant native species and effective planting techniques that support better outcomes. We will also cover soil preparation specifically for native plants. Finally, the session will explore how to replace a part of, or the entire traditional lawn into a more environmentally friendly alternative, reducing maintenance while increasing ecological value.

Thank you to everyone who uses our Community Compost at the east side of the Riverhurst Wetland (entrance at 3rd Ave and Connaught St). We would like to express that this compost bin is for organic waste ONLY and preferably cut into small bits as it composts much faster. The attached list is what is accepted.
Start your compost pile now, in the winter, and add it to our bin in the spring. Now's the perfect time to compost, actually.
