609 Steveston RCACS parades every Wednesday from 1800-2130. Who are we?

609 is a unit of the Air Cadet program in Richmond, BC. Everyone here is family.

With around 100 members, 609 offers a fun and unique experience for teens between the age of 12 to 19. From the newest recruit to the oldest alumni, we're a tight knit group! Not interested in simply learning to fly planes? Play in our marching band, learn about CPR with our First Aid team, ace your next presentation with our effective speaking sessions, experience trusting your team members in our Drill team, maybe even discover how to shoot an air rifle on our Range team!

Congratulations to WO1 Matthan Lee for successfully Aging Out of the Air Cadet Program!🎉

Throughout his 6 years of being in the Cadet Program, WO1 Lee has held many honorable and notable leadership roles within the 609 Squadron- such Flag Party (2022-2024), Rememberance Day Color Guard (2023-2024) Recruit Flight Comm (2024), Polaris FComm (2024-2025), Squadron Warrant Officer (2025), Deputy Squadron Commander (2025), and this year, taking the role and responsibility of being Squadron Commander (2025-2026). As the current Squadron Commander, WO1 Lee has shown incredible leadership for all the cadets within the squadron and works tirelessly with the NCOs to guarantee quality instructional time.

Valuing communication and Interpersonal connection, he has made an environment that promotes healthy correlation among the cadets- helping them grow in their personal and social identities. All while promoting discipline and knowledge simultaneously.

WO1 Lee is also actively involved in many cadet teams, such as Band (2020), First Aid (2020-2023), Effective Speaking (2023-2024), and Range (2024-2026).

WO1 Lee has also been awarded with numerous awards that has recognized his dedication to the squadron: Top Junior First Aid Cadet (2021-2022), Air Rifle Marksmanship Instructor (ARMI) (2022), Top Cadet Instructor (2024-2025), Cadet Medal of Excellence (2025-2026), and the Long Service Medal II.

Thank you, WO1 Lee, for everything you've done for the 609 Squadron. Your dedication, support, and jolly energy you have brought to the squadron will always be remembered😄. Congratulations on everything you have achieved throughout the years! We will all miss you!

On June 20th 609 held the Annual Ceremonial Review (ACR)!
It was a great opportunity to showcase the growth of all the cadets throughout the training year, and it was a chance to display the knowledge we gained from the classes, camps, and cadet activities we participated in. Several performances were also presented, such as the band display from Griffin Flight, and the drill routine from the Drill team!

Along with the displays, many awards were presented to the cadets who were recognized for their dedication and Commitment to the squadron!

On June 24th, our cadets got to celebrate the end of the training year, by having a Dine-In at the Continental Seafood Resturant🍽😋! Cadets got the chance to enjoy a 10-course Chinese Banquet-Style dinner that was accompanied by various cadet-led activities and preformances that were presented throughout the night.

The cadets also had a chance to listen to the speeches that were prepared by 3 of our warrants- WO1 Lee, WO2 Lu, and WO2 Sun. We hope them the best in their future endeavors as they say farewell to 609!
We wish everyone had fun and made long lasting memories at this event!

Early last month, our cadets participated in an overnight weekend-long Field Training Exercise (FTX)! For many cadets this was a new and exciting first time experience, where they got to collaborate with their fellow peers in hands-on activities and lessons that were led by our NCOs. These lessons covered some of the basic essential skills and knowledge when it comes to surviving in the wilderness.

Lessons included:
- Collecting drinkable water💧
- Starting a fire🔥
- Emergency help signals🛑‼️
- Setting up a half-tent⛺️
- Setting traps🪤
- Navigating using a compas🧭
- Building a stretcher🏥
And more!

Cadets were also given MREs to eat, cooked smores around the fire, and performed creative skits to showcase to the other cadets!
Despite the extreme heatwave, all the cadets did exceptionally well and they had a ton of fun!

On May 30th, 609 held their very first Sports Day event!
Cadets of all ranks participated in various activities that demonstrated and brought out their leadership skills, communication skills, and overall team integrity- all while interacting with peers and having fun! Activities included: Chuck the chicken, bench ball, capture the flag, dodgeball, and more!
Thank you so much to all the NCOs who took the time to organize this fun event, and we hope to see more and more poeple come next year!

On April 12th, our squadron’s first aid team competed at the first aid competition. This was the first competition ever since covid, so our cadets were very excited to compete. We sent our senior and junior team, each with 4 cadets. These cadets have been training, practicing, and studying for months prior, and the results show!

The junior team placed 3rd of 7, while the seniors placed 4th out of 12! Also, our junior team’s captain, Cpl Jessie Chan, got second for Best Team Captain. Congratulations to everyone who worked hard this year, and we hope to see everyone again next year!

Big shoutout to Capt. Mei and CV Sinn for coming out every week to teach the material, along with prepping practicals for the cadets to practice.

On Saturday, April 11th, cadets from 609 had the opportunity to go on a Coast Guard hovercraft tour. They learned more about how the hovercraft operates, and many said it was a great experience!⛴️
