🇨🇦🇯🇵 A journey of firsts, growth, and connection

Junior Team Canada has returned from the 2026 Kaiseiki Tournament in Akita, Japan—one of the most competitive high school kendo events in the world. Full post available in the CKF website 🔗

This year marked our 4th visit to Akita and a historic milestone:
✨ Canada’s first Junior Girls Team at Kaiseiki
✨ The first international girls’ team in tournament history

Over three days of Renseikai and competition, our athletes faced Japan’s best—pushing themselves, supporting one another, and growing with every match.

“This moment is incredibly meaningful. Their courage, preparation, and spirit represent how far Canadian kendo has come—and where it is going.”

We are proud of every athlete, coach, and supporter who made this journey possible. Thank you to our community for continuing to open doors for the next generation.

The Canadian Kendo Federation is honoured to announce the U18 Junior Team Canada delegation traveling to Akita, Japan from March 26–31, 2026 to participate in the prestigious Kaiseiki National High School Kendo Tournament and accompanying Renseikai.

This marks Canada’s fourth visit to Akita. Each participation continues to strengthen international relationships and contribute to the development of youth kendo across Canada.

This year is particularly significant. For the first time, Canada will send a Junior Girls Team in addition to the Junior Boys Team. This may represent the first participation of an international girls’ team in the history of the tournament — an important milestone for Canadian kendo and for the advancement of young women in our sport.

In Memoriam: Kim Taylor, Iaido Renshi 7-Dan; Jodo Renshi 7-Dan
Kim Taylor sensei, a tireless builder of Canadian Iaido and Jodo and a beloved teacher, passed away in February 2026. Widely recognized for his decades-long dedication to Canadian budo community, Taylor sensei was instrumental in building and nurturing both Iaido and Jodo in Canada since the mid 1980s.
Taylor sensei founded the Sei Do Kai Iaido and Jodo Club (1987), organized the first Canadian Iaido grading (1991) and founded the longest running Iaido and Jodo seminar in North America (Guelph Spring Seminar). Taylor sensei’s enthusiasm for the martial arts built meaningful connections between people. He spread his knowledge of the arts using early internet newsletters, published articles, websites, workshops, and seminars. These connections encouraged and mentored students and instructors in Canada, the United States, and many countries in Central and South America.
Kim Taylor sensei was an active member of the Canadian Kendo Federation as a CKF Board member, former CKF Secretary, former head of the CKF Jodo section and previous Vice President of the Ontario Kendo Federation.
The Canadian Iaido and Jodo community mourns his passing and celebrates a life dedicated to building the arts. His martial arts legacy lives on, remembered and passed forward through those he taught and inspired.
