Home on the Hill Supportive Housing To facilitate systemic change by recognizing that mental health needs will never be addressed completely without the inclusion of family & friends who care

Our Vision:
HOME ON THE HILL SUPPORTIVE HOUSING·SATURDAY, JANUARY 12, 2019·
To facilitate systemic change in recognizing that mental health needs will never be addressed completely without the inclusion of family and friends who care. Our Story:

Home on the Hill was started by the families of seriously mentally ill people living in our community. This organization addresses the gap in current me

ntal health services for the 2.5 percent who have serious mental illness. These individuals often cannot access mainstream supports and are supported by their families who compose our current informal mental health support and housing system. Fifty to ninety percent of those with mental illness live with their families according to Chan and O’Brien, 2011. Home on the Hill provides education through our Robert Veltheer Lecture Series on Mental Illness, through our website www.home-on-the-hill.ca and face book posts of pertinent articles on serious mental illness, and family support and respite. Home on the Hill offers a family support and respite program. We also provide art therapy run by a registered art therapist/psychotherapist, recreation program where our clients explore activities and make friends. An art expression group held weekly for caregivers at our office in Richmond Hill. We have just now added a drumming circle. These latter activities provide opportunities to acquire skills, build self esteem and offer integration. Home on the Hill has one supportive unit in the Richmond Hill Community Hub and a four beds at our house.

Hi There,

Our Virtual Open Caregiver Discussion Group will take place on Wednesday December 17, 2025 from 7:00-9:00 p.m.

Let's talk about Caring for a Loved One With SMI during the holidays. It takes planning, communication skills and more

We will be talking about planning for Hanukkah and Christmas. Let's talk about caring for our loved one with SMI during the holidays. The holidays have a way of stirring up memories- of what our families used to look like, of traditions we cherish, and of layers when life felt simpler.

But for families who love someone with a severe mental illness, the holidays can bring something else: hard decisions, planning, private grief and many questions families ask themselves "Should we invite them this year? And if we do, will it go okay?" We worry that our family members might be overwhelmed, withdrawn, paranoid or disruptive during a holiday gathering.- You are not alone. Let's learn ways to help navigate our holiday time. Learn new ways of communicating and share what works for your family.

Hi There ,

The Ontario Ministry of Health wants input on Community Treatment Orders (CTOs). This Year the Ministry is seeking feedback from individuals who have been subject to CTOs, family caregivers and substitute decision makers, and others who have been involved in the process.
There are two ways you can participate in this process. Please look below for more details.

It is important that they hear from caregivers and our experience.

Let the Ministry to hear from caregivers,

Warm regards,

Joni

The Ontario Ministry of Health is currently gathering input for its next report on Community Treatment Orders (CTOs). These provincial reviews take place every few years and can influence how CTOs are understood, implemented, and improved across the healthcare system. This year, the Ministry is seeking feedback from individuals who have been subject to CTOs, family caregivers and substitute decision makers, and others involved in the process. There are two ways to participate:

1) A Ministry-led focus group taking place this week
December 4th 2025 from 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM
Access the Zoom link CLICK HERE

2) An online survey for anyone who wishes to share their experiences or concerns: Ministry of Health Community Treatment Order Review Survey

Your perspective matters. Families often see firsthand how CTOs affect daily life, care coordination, and recovery. The caregiver and substitute decision maker voice is essential to ensuring that future policies reflect real needs and practical realities.

To help you understand the context, here is the most recent CTO report released by the Ministry: The Third Review of Community Treatment Orders | ontario.ca

If you or someone you support has experience with CTOs, we encourage you to consider participating. It is an important opportunity to inform future policy and to ensure that the voices of substitute decision makers and family caregivers are accurately represented.

Broader participation will help strengthen the range of perspectives the Ministry receives, and may ultimately benefit patients and their families for years to come.

It is important that they hear from caregivers and our experiences,

Let the Ministry hear from caregivers,

GIVING TUESDAY

This December, Hope Lives Here Because of You

Dear Friends of Home on the Hill,

As winter settles in and the days grow shorter, your kindness is the light that keeps hope burning bright at Home on the Hill.

This is what your support makes real every single day:

Adults living with serious mental illness have a true home — safe, affordable, and permanent — where the rent never forces them back to the street.

Recreation therapy brings them into the community — painting, drumming, community outings, laughing — rebuilding confidence and connection one joyful moment at a time.

Family caregivers finally get a break: respite hours, counselling, peer support, and the deep peace of knowing their loved one is safe and thriving.

Because of you, someone will laugh among friends this week.
Because of you, a caregiver will sleep through the night.
Because of you, a home stays warm and the door stays open.

Please copy and paste the link below and give whatever amount feels right today:
homeonthehillsupportivehousing.com/donate

Or you can e-transfer us at [email protected]

Thank you for making all of this possible — and for being the reason hope lives here.
With heartfelt gratitude,

The Home on the Hill Team

P.S. Even $25 keeps the art supplies flowing, the community outings happening, the respite hours coming, or delicious meals provided for another day.

“Together we can do so much!”
