Hundreds of thousands of chickens have died during France’s extreme heatwave last week.⁠
⁠
These animals endured lives inside an industrial system that treats them as commodities and many never even made it to the slaughterhouse. As temperatures continue to rise, farmed animals are increasingly paying the price for a crisis they did not create.⁠
⁠
Animal agriculture is not only one of the industries most vulnerable to climate change, it is also a major contributor to it. The sector produces significant greenhouse gas emissions, drives deforestation, and consumes vast amounts of land and water, fueling the very climate crisis that is making heatwaves more frequent and more intense.⁠
⁠
This is a stark reminder that climate justice must include animals.⁠
⁠
The solutions already exist: shifting towards plant-based food systems can reduce emissions, protect ecosystems, and spare billions of animals from suffering.⁠

In 2024, the world lost an estimated 26,000 square miles of tropical forest. That’s the equivalent of 18 soccer pitches disappearing every minute.⁠
⁠
Forests are among our greatest allies in the fight against the climate crisis. They store vast amounts of carbon, regulate rainfall, protect biodiversity, and support the livelihoods of millions of people. Yet they continue to be cleared at an alarming rate.⁠
⁠
A major driver of this destruction is animal agriculture. Vast areas of forest are cleared for cattle grazing and to grow feed crops for farmed animals, fuelling a system that is accelerating both biodiversity loss and climate breakdown.⁠
⁠
We cannot protect forests while ignoring one of the leading causes of their destruction.⁠
⁠
The Plant Based Treaty calls for a shift toward plant-based food systems as a critical climate solution that can help protect forests, restore ecosystems, and create a more sustainable future for all.⁠

A plant-based diet remains the single most effective dietary shift for climate mitigation, repeatedly endorsed by the IPCC. Now is the moment for concrete leadership from the Bonn secretariat.⁠
