Happy Seniors’ Day! 💜

Retired PSW, long-time member of SEIU Healthcare, and former chief steward, Jill McEnaney of Peterborough, Ontario, is the epitome of a lifetime powered by the union.

Even now, three years post-retirement, she keeps the flame burning by phone banking, attending union events, and ultimately continuing to fight for the wages, benefits, and working conditions healthcare workers deserve.

Because like Jill McEnaney says, “the fight continues, even after you retire.”

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Canada (also known as Orange Shirt Day), commemorated on September 30, reminds us to take a step back and honour residential school survivors, their families and Indigenous communities.

Today, and every day, we remember, and we act to break down systems of oppression!
As healthcare workers and union members, we commit to listening, learning, standing together, and taking action toward reconciliation and justice rooted in truth.

Our union joined thousands of allies and the Indigenous communities, specifically the Grassy Narrows First Nation, to march and fight for mercury justice and access to clean water.

We all have a responsibility to be present, show up and show out for our brothers and sisters in Grassy Narrows, who have been living with the destructive health effects of mercury poisoning in the English-Wabigoon River system since the 1960s.

Grassy Narrows, we stand with you.

Our members created signs to help raise their voices in support of the Grassy Narrows River Run on Wednesday, Sept. 23, in solidarity with the fight for environmental and mercury justice.
