Thanksgiving Back was a success again! 20 wonderful volunteers supported regenerative tourism by pulling invasive species and documenting native mushrooms!
We started with a land acknowledgment from Laura Dolha. As a proud member of Lake Babine Band, she shared songs and stories to welcome us to the land and remind us of our responsibility as stewards. She is the owner of Ancestral Heartbeat Tours, a 100% owned and operated Indigenous ecotourism adventure company on the traditional and unceded Secwépemc and Syilx territories.
Our hard working volunteers pulled 12 bags of the invasive hoary alyssum, common tansy, Canada thistle, chicory, and spotted knapw**d from Centennial park. A great way to make room for native species!🌿
In the afternoon, volunteers also assisted Wildsight Revelstoke with a mushroom BioBlitz (a MycoBlitz!) on Macpherson - it was a great afternoon with over 50 observations! Pictured is a woolly chanterelle, the admirable bolete, and coral fungus.🍄

🛑Stop the spread of spongy moth in B.C.🛑

Our latest press release is all about the spongy moth and how you can stop the spread! September is a great time to check your outdoor furniture and equipment for those fuzzy, brown egg masses!

Buy local, burn local is the best way you can reduce the movement of invasive insects!
-buy firewood within 80km of where you are burning it
-if you are transporting firewood, burn it first and completely
-leave leftover firewood for the next visitor

If you find a spongy moth, report it to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

Have you seen any of these black-and-white beetles this summer? 🪲🔍

One of them is native to Canada, and the other is not! Can you "spot" the difference?

Here in BC, you will hopefully be finding the native Whitespotted sawyer! They will always have a prominent white spot at the base of their wings, and they may or may not have additional white spots covering their wings.

The invasive look-alike is the Asian long-horned beetle, which does not have a prominent white spot at the base of the wings but will have white speckles elsewhere. These invasive beetles are destructive, wood-boring insects that have been reported in Ontario. Both their adult and larval stages can stunt the growth of young trees by feeding on the inner bark.

Asian long-horned beetles can spread through firewood or infested wood material, which is why it's important to check for the presence of these insects in potentially infested tree products.

Also, always Buy Local, Burn Local when it comes to firewood. If you have any leftover firewood, leave it behind for the next visitor. 🪵🔥

Join us at the visitor centre on Friday, September 4th from 11am to 4pm MDT!

We will be talking about aquatic invasive hitchhikers! Come learn about zebra and quagga mussels, whirling disease, and how to Clean, Drain, Dry and decontamination to prevent the spread. You'll even get to see some aquatic invasives up close! Bring your questions and spin the wheel for a chance to win a prize!

Fridays in the Field! 🥾🌿🦺

The (almost) entire CSISS team got together for one final staff outing before saying goodbye to our summer assistants, Jessie, Maddie, and Lara. The only one missing was our fearless leader and Executive Director, Robyn!

We took advantage of the sunny weather with a forest walk, a beautiful view of Revelstoke from the Skywalk, and an adventurously good time at the Aerial Park at Revelstoke Mountain Resort. It was the perfect way to celebrate all our hard work this summer—and send off our amazing assistants in style!
