Here's our trail report for Friday, August 14:

Wasn't it great to see the smoke clear on Wednesday? After a week of thick smoke, the shift in winds that cleaned out the air was most welcome. There's still major wildfires burning out of control in the Okanagan, so the situation could change with a change in weather patterns. Let's be thankful that smoke is the worst thing we have to deal with, and not the stress of fires raging near our community and forcing evacuations.

Unfortunately, the dry weather continues for the foreseeable future. Expect dusty conditions across our network, even in the alpine on Frisby Ridge. The only rain in the forecast is for next weekend, and we've long learned to not get our hopes up from a 10-day prognostication.

Trail crew was back to work this week and focused their attention on our last major adaptive bridge project. This time, they were on Stimulus, building a new bridge next to the log crossing on the lower part of the loop. We didn't want to remove that unique feature because we know people love it, so instead we're building a wider bridge next to it. The framing is done, and it should be finished up this week. When it is, Stimulus will be accessible to adaptive mountain bikers. We'd like to thank the Revelstoke Snowmobile Club for letting us use their trailer to transport materials to the site. We also got some nice cedar off-cuts for the supports from Stella-Jones in exchanged for a donation to the Revelstoke Women's Shelter.

Cheers to everyone who came out on Wednesday for the Dig Day on Tall Timber. We had a great turnout and the reroute is coming along great. There's still more work to be done, but this project will make Tall Timber more fun and sustainable going forward. Thank you Peter and Jacob for leading this project!

Our trail crew enjoyed a much-deserved week off this week, so instead of our usual report, we want to take the time to give a shoutout to our Trail Crew Sponsors:

Sadly, the smoke has really rolled into town this week and it's looking pretty bleak outside as I write this around Friday at noon. That said, it's hard to gauge how things will play out because weather patterns are always changing and a shift in winds can send the smoke elsewhere. Based on experience, sometimes the smoke comes and goes quickly, but we've also had summers where it lingers for days and even weeks on end. It's sad that this is becoming the new normal for August, but we also need to be honest about it. Of course, everyone has different tolerances when it comes to biking when it's smokey out. I recommend checking map.purpleair.com for real-time air quality readings, and firesmoke.ca for wildfire smoke forecasts. I'll be looking outside my window and heading out for mellow rides when I feel comfortable.

It hasn't rained in a while and the condition reports on Trailforks range from "dry" to "very dry" to "dusty AF." Fortunately, there is rain in the medium and long-term forecasts, so we'll be crossing our fingers and hoping it will wash away the smoke and bring tackiness back to the trails. If you've got a rain dance, now's the time to get out on the dance floor.

Trail crew is back to work on Monday and they'll be working on a range of major projects on Macpherson and Boulder for the next few weeks. We're pretty excited about them, but we're going to keep things under wraps until they're done.

We're also pretty stoked to have Jacob Tooke and Peter Wojnar leading a rebuild of Tall Timber. You can help out by joining a Dig Day on Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 5:30 p.m.

We love it when volunteers approach us to work on our trails. Rerouting Tall Timber has been on the RCA’s to-do list for a while, and we’re stoked that Jacob Tooke (left) and Peter Wojnar (right) have volunteered to take on that job!

Jacob worked on the RCA trail crew last year and has dug at Rampage for Georgia Astle, while Woj has built trail around the province for various organizations and bike film projects. We’re thrilled to have their experience on board. Both builders ride for Kona Bikes, whose support is helping them commit the time it will take to do a great job on this build. Thank you Kona!

They’re getting the work started this week, but to help out, we’re hosting a Dig Day on Wednesday, Aug. 12.

To join in, meet at the snowmobile club welcome centre at 5:30 p.m. We'll gather tools, then head to the trail to get to work. Please come in proper work clothes, including solid shoes, long pants, and work gloves; and bring your own food and water. Everyone who takes part will get a gift card from one of our sponsors - The Big Eddy Pub, The Village Idiot, and The Chesterfield.

We're stoked to be taking part in Thanksgiving Back again this year on Saturday, Oct. 3. For this year, we're hosting a Dig Day where visitors to our community will get a chance work on one of our trails and learn what goes into maintaining our world-class network.

Thanksgiving Back is a program started by Tourism Revelstoke that gives visitors an opportunity to be part of our community by volunteering with local organizations on registered volunteer projects. As a thank-you, volunteers get reimbursed up to $400 when they book two or more nights accommodation.

We owe an overdue thanks to Revystoked Brewing Company for their RCA May fundraiser. They donated $1 from every pint sold that month to the RCA, raising $690 for our trails! Here's our trail report for Friday, July 31:

I can't believe it's the August long-weekend already. It feels like the summer is flying by, and there's still so much riding to do.

Aside from a flash storm last Saturday, the weather was consistently hot and dry the past week. I've been enjoying evening rides on Macpherson lately, where the northerly aspect and forest cover makes for nice, cool rides and good quality dirt. If you head to Boulder and Sunnyside, expect things to be loose and dusty. Frisby Ridge is a mixed bag of conditions, but the wildflowers and views are worth heading up there for.

The weather forecast looks like a repeat of last week, with the potential for thunderstorms on Saturday, followed by sunny skies and temps in the mid to high 20s the rest of the week. The big wildcard right now is the smoke conditions. We've all gotten used to hazy skies from wildfire smoke in summer, but if you're concerned about smoke, we recommend visiting firesmoke.ca to get a rough idea of what to expect and figure out the best time to be on the trails.

Our trail crew started the week clearing blow down on Macpherson before moving over to Frisby Ridge for a couple of days to tackle some major brushing work. Frisby is a fast, two-way trail, so we want to make sure there's good sightlines so we can see eachother coming. On Thursday morning, they cleaned up Tall Timber on Boulder. We then met at Revelstoke Mountain Resort for performance reviews on the gondola and a little team building before the long weekend.

The crew is off next week for a mid-season break. They'll be back at it on Aug. 10 until the season ends in late-October.

Here's our Trail Report for Friday, July 24:

This is arguably the toughest time of the summer for our trail crew. They're halfway through the season and the long, physical days are starting to add up. It's hot out, the mosquitoes have emerged, it's smoky, and the trails are dry and there's no good dirt to work with.

When it's like this, we shift gears and focus on brushing and raking trails, and repairing and replacing bridges, and building new features. This week, the crew got started removing downed trees on Hemlock Groove. They also brushed S*x on the Beach, Stimulus, and under the power lines on Boulder. They cleaned up Gravy Bacon and, finally, built a new feature on Snakes & Ladders. Unfortunately, we had some technical difficulties with the photos, so we only have a few to share this week.

The dry weather is expected to continue for the foreseeable future, though there are thunderstorms in the forecast this weekend. However, the steady rain we need to make the trails tacky again is nowhere in the forecast. You'll find the best conditions in the alpine and in the darkest forests lower down.

Here's our Trail Report for Friday, July 17:

We celebrated the annual opening of Frisby Ridge on Wednesday. We weren't sure where the snowline would be, so we were pretty stoked to find out our trail crew made it to the first high point the day before. There's still snow in the alpine, but it is melting quickly. Let us know in the comments if you've made it to the second high point and beyond.

Lower down, trails on Boulder are getting pretty dry and dusty, while the dirt on Macpherson is holding up nicely, especially on forested trails like Dusty Beaver and Tantrum.

Trail crew spent Monday and Tuesday working on Frisby Ridge. They rode to the first high point, removing trees, clearing debris, and fixing some we spots along the way. On Wednesday and Thursday, they worked on Boulder, removing a downed tree on Cash Advance, brushing Iron Lotus, and working on the forested section of Snakes & Ladders.

Conditions are going to stay dry for the foreseeable future. While there's a smattering of rain in the forecast, it's not enough to make a difference. Highs are expected to stay around 30 C for at least the next week, so enjoy the sunny weather and escape to the alpine if the valley is too hot for comfort.

Opening day is here for Frisby Ridge and we have some good news to report! Our trail crew was able to make it to the first high point today and only encountered a few snow patches along the way. Beyond that, it's still pretty snowy, but we'll take it considering what was reported last week. The rest of the snow should melt away over the next few days, though we imagine some patches will linger on the high north-facing aspects for a bit longer.

If you're heading up there, please ride with care. The upper areas have just melted out, so they're still pretty wet in spots. As we always say - if you encounter a wet spot, ride slowly through it, not around it. The same goes for snow patches - walk across them, not around them. Don't widen the trail just to keep you and your bike dry.

On the other local alpine trails, we got word from Wandering Wheels that they were able to ride Martha Creek from the top on Saturday. Keystone is snow-free until the waterfall and the Recreation Sites & Trails BC crew bucked out all the trees to that point. Finally, Revelstoke Mountain Resort is open to the very top, so you can ride all 5,620 vertical feet of 5620!
