Save the date for next spring.

The CAA Spring Conference is a national gathering of avalanche professionals, industry partners, and leaders. Returning May 4-6, 2027, our annual event brings the community together to share research, case studies, operational insights, and emerging best practices, while supporting continuing professional development.

Congratulations to The CAA's Young Snow Professional (YSP) award recipients, Seth Hewie and Jacopo Borsotti.

The ISSW 2026 - International Snow Science Workshop Young Snow Professional Award Program supports early-career avalanche practitioners and researchers by helping reduce barriers to conference participation and fostering professional development within the international avalanche community.

For ISSW 2026, five conference registrations have been reserved for YSPs nominated by participating organizations from across the international avalanche community, including OEGSL (Austria), NORSKED (Norway), the American Avalanche Association, and the Canadian Avalanche Association. Each organization selects its recipient(s) through its own application and selection process.

Seth is an Avalanche and Geomatics Technician working year-round with Alpine Solutions, based in Whitehorse, Yukon. His current work spans active involvement in dynamic avalanche forecasting programs across highway and industrial projects, alongside cartography, avalanche modelling, and UAV LiDAR survey work.

Jacopo Borsotti obtained his MSc in Mathematics at the University of Parma, while carrying out an internship at the Livigno Avalanche Center Alpsolut. During this period, he developed new modelling approaches to support operational avalanche forecasting, combining snowpack simulations and digital elevation models to investigate snow stability and terrain predisposition to avalanche release. After graduation, he worked as a research fellow in mathematical physics at the University of Parma. In Fall 2025, he joined the Simon Fraser Avalanche Research Program (SARP) as a PhD student, focusing on the integration of ensemble modelling and SAR remote sensing into operational avalanche forecasting.

The award covers the recipient's ISSW registration fee and $500 to support travel and accommodation at the international event.

As best practices and techniques for AvSAR continue to evolve, the CAA is offering members the opportunity to update and refresh their skills while continuing their professional development. Don’t miss your chance to apply for this year’s Women’s+ Ops Level 1 Scholarship. Applications close August 3, 2026.
 
In recognition of women’s underrepresentation across ITP courses, the CAA pledges to cover the full Avalanche Operations Level 1 course and hut fees of one successful scholarship recipient for an Avalanche Operations Level 1 course at Kootenay Pass, BC, from February 20 - 27, 2027.
 
This scholarship is available to students who identify as women, gender non-conforming, non-binary, genderqueer, and/or other marginalized gender identities. Visit the link in the bio or the scholarship and grants page of our site to learn more and apply.

The Summer 2026 issue of The Avalanche Journal will be in mailboxes in August. This Journal contains an interview with Pascal Haegeli discussing his numerous important contributions to the avalanche profession and the founding of Simon Fraser University’s Avalanche Research Program (SARP). It also contains tributes from colleagues, students, and friends about his time in Canada and his impact on the country's avalanche industry.

Additionally, this issue covers Avalanche Canada's Fatality Database project and a look at gender in the avalanche industry: Is it a man's world? Find out in Volume 141 of The Avalanche Journal.

Looking forward, we're planning an issue focused on atmospheric rivers and major storm events. We'd also like to expand on last summer's issue looking at the Conceptual Model of Avalanche Hazard by focusing on avalanche problems.
