Please join us tomorrow at City Council to show support for old growth as Wildsight Revelstoke brings forward concerns about the Revelstoke Community Forest Corporation proposal to develop a new road and cutblock in the Goldstream. The proposed road would cut through an existing old growth deferral zone. Although the proposed cutblock is not within a protected old growth deferral, it contains old growth and ancient trees.

Revelstoke Community Forest Corporation is owned by the city of Revelstoke. This is our community forestry corporation so lets make sure our concerns are represented.

These words and film photographies from are part of an ongoing series « Reconnect with your old roots, a tour in the Old Growth ».

The goal of this project is to connect Revelstoke athletes, artists and riders with our local ancient forest and document their experience.

Enjoy Maxime’s art and some of his words, describing his own ancient and personal connection to old trees :
« Maybe it’s because old growth forests have been around for hundreds of years and even thousands of years, far outliving the lives of anyone of us. There they are, steadily creaking and growing through all the elements, year after year.

One of the most vivid childhood memories of mine was climbing amongst the maple trees in the park around from my grandmother’s apartment in Montreal. Those bright, warm, and scented summer days, with the bark weathered down from me and all the other kids that climbed amongst its branches, exploring the world.

They were massive trees, hundreds of years old, bearing the weight of children and generations- past and future.

Moments like these, twenty-some-odd years later, bring me back to those blissful childhood days. Don’t we all want to feel like a kid again sometimes ?

I have a lot of catching up to do when it comes to old growth conservation and what that entails, but I can assure you is that there is no other feeling like being surrounded by these beautiful giants. To me, that is undeniably worth protecting. I am excited to share the film images from our journey in the coming days. »

The goal of this series is to document what people experience in Old Growth stands, as photographers, riders or nature enthusiasts.

She dives deep into the relationship between our senses and ancient trees, and how they positively affect us.

« B.C. logging firm wants to avoid cutting old growth, but province said it must pay » 🪵

Our local mill in Revelstoke, Downie Timber has avoided logging and is looking for compensation for the cut blocks leading into Argonaut Creek, the location that our blockade at the Big Mouth, located north of Revelstoke was protecting for over a year last year.

While trying to do the right thing by not logging these extremely valuable deferral areas (as outlined by the Old Growth Strategic Review Panel) Downie “was told by the Crown corporation that manages B.C.’s public forests to cut the trees down or pay to leave them standing,”

Kerry Rouck, the chief forester at Downie said “The irony is that we’re trying to work towards a balanced conservation result, and we stand to be penalized”

The government is clearly not holding up their promises to protect old growth on a local or provincial level, this is more talk and log! Downie is taking a brave and necessary step in choosing to not log in deferral areas and in seeking alternatives. As a community it is important that we stand together in support of a just transition for the forestry sector and implement a moratorium on old growth logging.

United for Old Growth rally 📣

On Saturday, March 4th citizens of Revelstoke gathered downtown at Grizzly Plaza for a peaceful rally. This rally was in solidarity with a province-wide super rally supported by more than 220 organizations. Our event aligned with in Nelson.

We want to thank all the kindhearted humans of all ages (and dogs) who came out in support of the Inland Temperate Rainforest and ancient trees around the province. Despite cold and snow over 50 people from our community came out to show their support for our old growth!

Spirits were high, and we could feel the positive energy that everyone brought.
Keep your eyes out for future events, we hope to see everyone soon ! 🌲💚

🚨Reminder 🚨
Old Growth Revyution (OGR) will be hosting a peaceful rally tomorrow Saturday, March 4th, 2023. 📣

The rally will be held downtown at Grizzly Plaza at 4pm.
The goal of this march and rally is to demonstrate the broad-based support for old-growth protection in BC.

Share widely, bring your friends, family and even dogs along.

What we’re asking for :

• Immediately halt logging in at-risk old growth forests and additional areas suggested by First Nations
• Provide fulsome and immediate financial support for First Nations to implement logging deferrals and resilience planning on their unceded territories, including
• Indigenous conservation strategies and compensation for any lost revenues and employment as a result of deferrals
• Pursue full protection as the goal for all deferral areas, and invest to make protection the best economic option
• Fulfill its election promise to implement all 14 recommendations of the OGSR panel by September 2023, within the 3-year timeline which government promised, including biodiversity legislation for all sectors, and provide regular progress reports
• Urgently move toward the paradigm shift and resilience planning outlined in the OGSR recommendations, prioritizing ecosystem integrity and biodiversity as the highest priority of forest management and as essential in the climate crisis
• Implement a just transition for all communities while moving toward a sustainable, second-growth forest industry
• Provide regular and detailed updates on deferrals and long-term solutions to safeguard and restore at-risk old growth; communications on all forest stewardship related decision making; and reports on timelines and progress to ensure transparency and accountability for all OGSR recommendations
