Fun food fact Friday! 🌱

Peas start losing their natural sweetness as soon as they're picked. That's why fresh garden peas taste so sweet! The sugars in the peas gradually turn into starch after harvest. The sooner they're eaten, the sweeter they are!

With gardening season underway across Saskatchewan, peas are often one of the first vegetables gardeners get excited to harvest. If you've ever eaten one straight from the pod while standing in the garden, you know exactly why they're sometimes called nature's candy 💚

One of the sweetest additions to this year's National Indigenous Peoples Day Holiday Basket is Saskatoon Berry Spread from Over the Hill Orchards & Winery. 🫐

Located in the beautiful Qu’Appelle Valley near Lumsden, Over the Hill Orchards is a family-owned Saskatchewan orchard dedicated to growing and celebrating prairie fruit right here at home.

Saskatoon berries have been an important food across the Prairies for generations and hold cultural significance for many Indigenous peoples. Found growing throughout the region, these hardy berries have long been gathered, shared, and enjoyed in everything from dried foods to jams and desserts. Their connection to the land makes them a meaningful part of this year's basket.

By including products from local producers like Over the Hill Orchards, we're celebrating the foods, stories, and connections that bring our communities together.

This year’s National Indigenous Peoples Day Holiday Basket is rooted in community, and we’re grateful to be working alongside Circle Project Assoc. Inc. as a community partner for this initiative. 🌿

For decades, The Circle Project has supported individuals and families in Regina through programs grounded in healing, cultural connection, balance, and community. Their work is guided by the understanding that everything is connected, our wellbeing, our relationships, and the communities we build together.

This year’s National Indigenous Peoples Day Holiday Basket includes Bison Pemmican from Canadian Prairie Bison🌾

Pemmican has deep roots across the Prairies, traditionally made by Indigenous and Métis communities using dried bison, fat, and berries to create a nourishing food that could be shared, stored, and carried through long journeys and seasons. Today, Canadian Prairie Bison continues that connection by creating pemmican with locally raised bison and berries sourced here in Western Canada.

As part of this year’s Holiday Basket, we wanted to highlight foods that bring people together around the table, in community, and through shared stories and traditions. Supporting local producers is an important part of that connection.

Each basket will include a pack of bison pemmican alongside fresh produce and other locally inspired items curated for National Indigenous Peoples Day.

Fun food fact! ☀️🍉

Did you know some fruits and veggies are made up of more than 90% water?

Watermelon, cucumber, strawberries, celery, and lettuce can all help you stay hydrated, especially during busy events and warm Saskatchewan weekends 🌱

Perfect fuel for wandering the Cathedral Village Arts Festival or just soaking up a little sunshine! 💛

A big thank you to mâmawêyatitân centre for hosting Community Wellness Day last week ❤️

We spent the day chatting with so many friendly faces, connecting with community partners, and sharing more about REACH programs and services.

And of course, thank you to all the kids (and parents!) who stopped by to take a whack at our game, you definitely kept our table busy 😄

We’re always grateful for opportunities to connect with the community and be part of events like this!
