September is the First Ukrainian Heritage Month in Saskatchewan
Remarks from Elena Krueger, President, UCC Saskatchewan on the occasion of the launch of Ukrainian Heritage Month in Saskatchewan
Ukrainian Day in the Park, Saturday, August 29, 2026, Saskatoon, SK
On behalf of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress of Saskatchewan, I would like to thank the Ukrainian Day in the Park festival organizers as well as the many volunteers who work so hard throughout the year to plan this fantastic event for all of you to enjoy!
Today we celebrate 25 years of Ukrainian Day in the Park! This year’s festival feels extra special, as our celebration of this anniversary year also highlights several important anniversaries within our Ukrainian community.
This year, we are also celebrating:
35 years of Ukraine’s independence,
135th years of Ukrainian settlement in Canada,
the 110th anniversary of the St. Petro Mohyla Institute,
and the 90th anniversary of the Ukrainian Museum of Canada.
We also recognize the longstanding Ukrainian institutions, organizations, and festivals, like today’s, that have established themselves as important centres of culture, identity and education in Saskatchewan stewarding our community’s development and growth.
These anniversaries underscore the enduring cultural impact that the Saskatchewan Ukrainian community has made and continues to make on our province; these contributions are being recognized outside of our community as well.
On behalf of UCC Saskatchewan, I wish to thank Saskatchewan Minister of Parks, Culture, and Sport, the Hon. Alana Ross, for her leadership in the codification of September as Ukrainian Heritage Month in Saskatchewan as part of the “From Many Peoples Strength” Act. Today, we launch the inaugural recognition!
Additionally, I extend my gratitude to our UCC Saskatchewan vice president, Charlene Tebutt for her work with Minister Ross’s office in moving this proclamation forward.
Support for Ukrainian Heritage Month goes beyond the Saskatchewan Ukrainian community; it recognizes the valuable role Ukrainians have played in the development of our province. And, in turn, this underscores the attention that our province holds in support of Ukraine as a sovereign nation. In Ukraine’s 35 years of independence, it has spent 12 years defending that sovereignty! As Canadians, we can all appreciate the value of a nation distinguishing itself as separate and unique from increasingly hostile neighbours.
For 135 years, Ukrainians in Canada have contributed to building this country while never losing sight of where they came from.
As we celebrate Ukrainian Day in the Park, the inaugural Saskatchewan Ukrainian Heritage Month, and these many remarkable anniversaries, let us remember that the freedoms we celebrate here in Canada are the very freedoms Ukrainians continue to defend.

Від імені Конгресу українців Канади в Саскачевані хочу подякувати організаторам фестивалю Ukrainian Day in the Park, а також численним волонтерам, які цілий рік наполегливо працюють, щоб підготувати цю чудову подію для всіх вас!
Сьогодні ми святкуємо 25 років Ukrainian Day in the Park! Цьогорічний фестиваль особливий, адже разом із цією річницею ми відзначаємо і кілька важливих ювілеїв нашої української громади.
Цього року ми також святкуємо:
35 років Незалежності України,
135 років українського поселення в Канаді,
110 років Інституту святого Петра Могили,
90 років Українського музею Канади.
Ми також віддаємо належне давнім українським інституціям, організаціям і фестивалям, як-от сьогоднішній, що утвердилися як важливі осередки культури, ідентичності та освіти в Саскачевані й дбають про розвиток і зростання нашої громади.
Ці річниці підкреслюють тривалий культурний вплив, який українська громада Саскачевану справляла і далі справляє на нашу провінцію. Цей внесок визнають і поза межами нашої громади.
Від імені КУК Саскачевану дякую міністерці парків, культури і спорту Саскачевану, високоповажній Алані Росс, за її провід у закріпленні вересня як Місяця української спадщини в Саскачевані в межах акту «From Many Peoples Strength». Сьогодні ми починаємо перше таке відзначення!
Окремо дякую віцепрезидентці КУК Саскачевану Шарлін Тебатт за роботу з офісом міністерки Росс задля просування цієї проголошення.
Підтримка Місяця української спадщини виходить за межі української громади Саскачевану. Вона визнає ту цінну роль, яку українці відіграли в розбудові нашої провінції. І це, своєю чергою, підкреслює увагу, яку наша провінція приділяє підтримці України як суверенної держави. За 35 років незалежності Україна 12 років боронить цей суверенітет! Ми, канадці, добре розуміємо, що означає для нації утверджувати себе окремою і самобутньою поряд із дедалі ворожішими сусідами.
Протягом 135 років українці в Канаді розбудовували цю країну, ніколи не забуваючи, звідки вони.
Святкуючи Ukrainian Day in the Park, перший Місяць української спадщини в Саскачевані та ці численні визначні річниці, пам'ятаймо: свободи, які ми святкуємо тут, у Канаді, це саме ті свободи, які українці продовжують боронити.
Слава Україні! Героям слава!
