Today, May 28th 2026, marks a monumental day in Canada.

On this day twenty-six years ago, the remains of the Unknown Soldier were laid to rest at the National War Memorial in Ottawa.

The Royal Canadian Legion was determined to establish a resting place of honour and respect for one soldier, that would represent all. A key decision was to select the Unknown Soldier from the First World War battlefield near Vimy Ridge, symbolizing a defining moment in Canadian history when all four Canadian divisions fought together under Canadian command

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a sacred site of Remembrance, representing all of the servicemen and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Caring for the fallen: A new volunteer program to maintain war graves in Canada.

Brittany Johnson is expecting her first baby in July. But the mom-to-be is no stranger to nurturing needy souls.

For the past year, Johnson has been carefully tending the memories of 25 veterans buried in Commonwealth war graves in and around her home of Yorkton, Sask.

As a volunteer caretaker with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), Johnson does this out of the goodness of her heart and a desire to give back.

“It’s peaceful work,” she told Legion Magazine. “Especially when you’re out in some of these country cemeteries alone. It gives you a lot of time to reflect and be thankful for everything that we have.”
