On November 2-3, 2026, Saskatoon will host Canada’s Rural and Remote Broadband Community Conference (CRRBC), Western Canada. The Conference, titled The Infinite Build: Navigating the Perpetual Horizon of Connectivity will bring together stakeholders committed to strengthening Canada’s rural and remote infrastructure and access to connectivity.

Broadband connectivity has a direct correlation to community growth and well-being. Improved connectivity has far-reaching positive impacts, from increasing opportunities for healthcare through virtual care services to creating jobs and improving education.

Improved broadband connectivity is one of SUMA’s advocacy priorities, with SUMA CEO Jean-Marc Nadeau co-chairing the Saskatchewan Broadband Action Committee (SBAC).

SBAC proudly supports CRRBC Western Canada and looks forward to the ongoing conversations around broadband connectivity and access for all areas of the province.

This week, SUMA was pleased to join Minister Eric Schmalz and fellow municipal leaders in Ottawa to advocate for the priorities of Saskatchewan's hometowns.

The delegation met with a wide range of advocates, including FCM, Parliamentary Secretary Kody Blois, Secretary of State Buckley Belanger, Minister Eleanor Olszewski, and Parliamentary Secretary Jennifer McKelvie to discuss critical issues facing municipalities. Conversations focused on the need for sustained infrastructure investment, support in responding to tariff-related economic pressures, and collaborative solutions to address housing challenges and support community growth across Saskatchewan.

The latest episode of MuniCast has dropped!

In MuniCast S11:E3, Building Stronger Communities: Municipal-First Nations Collaboration, Bonnie Evans, Senior Advisor, and Brad Swiftwolfe, Executive Director, both with the Battlefords Regional Community Coalition (BRCC), share the story of BRCC and the lessons they've learned about building trust, creating partnerships, and working together toward a stronger future. In this episode, they discuss how the coalition was formed, the ongoing work of building trust and understanding, and the collaborative projects helping to strengthen the region.

We're pleased to be in Ottawa this week alongside Minister of Government Relations Eric Schmalz, Saskatchewan municipal leaders, and our sister organization, SARM, to bring municipal priorities directly to federal leaders and decision-makers. Today's meetings included the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister Kody Blois, and Build Canada Homes CEO Ana Bailão, with discussions focused on infrastructure, housing, and supporting the long-term success of Saskatchewan communities.

SUMA was pleased to meet with MP Brad Redekopp yesterday to discuss his proposed Housing Cost Transparency Act (Bill C-287). The bill is intended to increase transparency in the development of national building code changes by requiring clearer public reporting on the costs, impacts, and assumptions associated with proposed code amendments. Municipal governments share an interest in ensuring that policies and regulations support the delivery of safe, affordable housing while balancing the financial realities facing communities across Canada.

SUMA extends our condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of former MLA, opposition leader, minister and Deputy Premier Ken Krawetz on the news of his passing.

Former Minister Krawetz was first elected to the Saskatchewan legislature in 1995, and in 1997 joined several others to form the Sask. Party. His political career with the Sask. Party included stints as finance minister and education minister, and he was named Deputy Premier in 2004. Former minister Krawetz left cabinet in 2015.

At SUMA, we are working to understand the role of municipalities in advancing Truth and Reconciliation. A year ago, we signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Office of the Treaty Commissioner (OTC) that aims to strengthen Treaty relations among urban municipalities in Saskatchewan--the towns, villages, resort villages, cities, and northern municipalities SUMA represents. We are working together to promote understanding of Treaty rights among municipalities and to facilitate relationship-building.

On September 30, we recognize the historic and ongoing harms faced by Indigenous Peoples and communities and the responsibility of local governments in working toward a better future together.
