Buffalo People Arts Institute

Buffalo People Arts Institute Buffalo People Arts Institute is about sharing traditional Indigenous teachings and knowledge and nurturing it every day so our culture thrives.

Not too long ago we, as Indigenous People, were connected to the buffalo in a way that made us reliant on them for our survival. The buffalo are strong and resilient and are the true Natives of this land. They roamed this land in vast herds and we followed them. We would camp around their herds and hunt them for food, shelter, clothing, cooking utensils, sewing materials, spiritual ceremonies and

honour them for allowing us the privilege of sharing in their essence of being and every sacred part of them in our day to day lives. Because of this heavy reliance on them for survival when they were taken from this land our hearts were taken away too. Our strength and determination to survive remains strong because we have blood memory of those times when the buffalo and our people shared this territory called Canada. They are making their return figuratively and literally and our hearts grow stronger and we are succeeding and becoming a strong buffalo nation. We remember our heritage and our ancestors as we are preparing the future and laying the groundwork for the ones yet unborn. Through arts and culture we will tap into those blood memories and re-learn what is inside us to share with others to help them to succeed until all of us are successful and leaders in our family and community. Sharing our buffalo knowledge.

Something to look into and watch.

Part of the Smithsonian's "Bison Standing Strong" America 250th.
They collected DNA from the Hornaday Diorama and other bones from that time period and compared it to todays Bison DNA. Comparing the two, they are hoping to help save the future of our bison and genetic diversity.
