Look at that little moustache!

This Yellow-shafted Northern Flicker is a type of woodpecker found across much of Canada. Unlike many woodpeckers, flickers spend lots of time on the ground, digging for ants and other insects.

That moustache is called a malar stripe. Males have a black stripe, while females don’t have one. Their Red-shafted relatives sport a red stripe instead!

Nature is full of little details like this that make getting to know our wildlife so interesting!

Window strikes can be serious for birds, even when there are no obvious external injuries.

This Broad-winged Hawk arrived at Salthaven West with a mild concussion after hitting a window.

Thankfully, the hawk recovered really well. After about 10 days of care and monitoring, he was strong, alert and ready to go.

One of the best ways to help birds like this one is to make our windows safer. Look into bird-friendly window treatments, like Feather Friendly, for your home.

This mountain cottontail, also known as a Nuttall’s cottontail, fell out of a car engine when the vehicle arrived at a local l**e shop in Moose Jaw for an oil change.

The shop staff quickly noticed the rabbit was covered in oil and safely contained her, knowing she needed help. When she arrived at Salthaven West, we gently bathed her and warmed her in our critical care incubator.

Rabbits are incredibly sensitive and can become very stressed, so we waited until she was more stable before giving her a second bath a couple of days later.

Thankfully, she continued to improve. During her two weeks in care, she happily enjoyed plenty of dandelion, clover and lettuce greens.

Once she was healthy and ready, she was released back into the wild in Moose Jaw, right where she belonged.

A huge thank you to the l**e shop staff for noticing her, acting quickly and getting her the help she needed!

Stories like this are possible because of the people who step up when wildlife needs help. Thank you for being part of the community that helps give wildlife a second chance!

Earlier this month, these two Cedar Waxwings arrived at Salthaven West after flying into windows. Thankfully, both made a full recovery, were banded, and released back into the wild!

With fall migration underway, window strikes are a serious risk. Help prevent collisions by adding Feather Friendly markers or other closely spaced markers to the outside of your windows.

If a bird hits your window, place it in a ventilated, softly lined box in a dark, quiet place. Don’t offer food or water. Call our wildlife helpline at 639-999-4957 or your nearest licensed wildlife rehab centre for guidance.

Fun fact: Cedar Waxwings LOVE fruit! Berries make up a big part of their diet.

We are so happy to share that the two young badgers have officially been released! 🦡🦡

They came to us after their mother was found deceased, leaving them orphaned. Sadly, one of their siblings passed away unexpectedly while in care. We’re still waiting on the necropsy results, so we don’t yet know the cause.

After months of care, these two were ready to return to the wild. And when release day came, they were exactly what we hoped to see: feisty, defensive, and very, very wild (all things wild badgers should be)!

They were released onto private native prairie land, far from people, where they can continue growing and doing what badgers do.

This success was truly a team effort. Thank you to our staff and volunteers, Animal Clinic of Regina for their urgent medical care, Wildlife Rescue Society of Saskatchewan for getting them to us so quickly, and the Ministry of Environment for working with us to find an appropriate release habitat.

A special thank you to our staff member Kaylyn for making the two-hour trip to release them, and to Lindsay for generously sharing her beautiful land.

And to everyone who donated toward their care and our new clinic, thank you! Your support helped give these badgers a chance to grow, heal and return to the wild.

After everything they’ve been through, seeing them head off into the prairie was pretty special.

Meet this little squab learning an important skill: how to eat all on their own!

Baby pigeons are called squabs, and when they’re young, they’re covered in fine yellow hairs that are eventually replaced by feathers.

As they grow, pigeons can develop a huge range of colours, from brown and grey to white. But no matter what their adult plumage looks like, they’ll still have that classic iridescent shimmer around their head.

Independent eating is just one of the many skills young pigeons need to master as they grow.
