🚨💔 Reminder: Animals Cannot Protect Themselves from Ticks. 💔🚨
The puppies pictured below are suffering from severe tick infestations. Tragically, two puppies from this litter did not survive. 💔 Unfortunately, this is something we see every year, and in most cases, it is entirely preventable.
Ticks can cause:
• Anemia (blood loss)
• Pain and infection
• Weakness
• Tick paralysis
• Seizures
• Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses
• Death in severe cases
✔️ Prevention is available:
• Bravecto provides approximately 3 months of protection with a single dose (typically $70 to $80, depending on the dog’s weight).
• NexGard is given once monthly (typically around $30 per dose, depending on the dog’s weight).
• Puppies must generally be at least 8 weeks old before receiving these products.
• Check your dogs daily, especially around the ears, face, neck, armpits, groin, and between the toes.
**If cost is a barrier, we encourage pet owners to put together a simple fundraiser on Facebook. Fellow community members are often happy to support those who are actively working to care for their animals!**
✔️ To remove ticks:
• Use tweezers or a tick remover.
• Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible.
• Pull straight out with steady pressure.
• Dispose of ticks in a sealed container with rubbing alcohol.
⚠️ Seek help immediately if:
• A dog or puppy is covered in ticks.
• The animal is crying out in pain.
• The animal is weak or having trouble walking.
• You cannot safely remove the ticks yourself.
Many veterinary clinics are willing to work with communities to improve access to tick prevention. If your community does not currently have a program in place, speak with your Animal Wellness Committee, leadership, or local veterinary clinic about bulk ordering options.
If you need help, ask early. Local rescues, humane societies, SPCAs, Animal Wellness Committees, and community members may be able to assist with education, transportation, supplies, or connecting you with veterinary care.
However, helping animals is a shared effort. Sustainable solutions require owners and caregivers to be actively involved in the care of their animals. No rescue or organization can solve the problem alone.
Lastly, if you see a dog suffering, even if it is not your own, please do what you can to help or connect the owner with someone who can.
No dog should suffer from a preventable tick infestation. 💔
