The Sask Heritage Coalition had to check out this rug hooking project underway at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum as part of our Key to Cultural Heritage Initiative. Swipe to get a closer (and closer, and closer) look at the beautiful work being done by Mètis elder Margaret Harrison, who is honouring her heritage through her work.
Swipe to the end to see what the rug will look like when done!
Margaret is assisted by Bailey Randell-Monsebroten, Curator of Indigenous Cultural Heritage at the RSM, and they worked together to bring this community project to the museum. By showing off not just the finished project but the process behind the work, they’re revitalizing the living heritage of the lesser-known art of rug hooking. The art also depicts various important symbols of Metis culture, like the Red River cart, which was used as a mode of transportation in the mid to late 1800s.
You may not be able to see the rug on display quite yet, but the Royal Saskatchewan Museum would love to see you this summer. Visit their website to check out their hours and plan your visit today.
