The Sask Heritage Coalition had to check out this rug hooking project underway at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum as part of our Key to Cultural Heritage Initiative. Swipe to get a closer (and closer, and closer) look at the beautiful work being done by Mètis elder Margaret Harrison, who is honouring her heritage through her work.

Swipe to the end to see what the rug will look like when done!

Margaret is assisted by Bailey Randell-Monsebroten, Curator of Indigenous Cultural Heritage at the RSM, and they worked together to bring this community project to the museum. By showing off not just the finished project but the process behind the work, they’re revitalizing the living heritage of the lesser-known art of rug hooking. The art also depicts various important symbols of Metis culture, like the Red River cart, which was used as a mode of transportation in the mid to late 1800s.

You may not be able to see the rug on display quite yet, but the Royal Saskatchewan Museum would love to see you this summer. Visit their website to check out their hours and plan your visit today.

On Wednesday, June 3rd, the Heritage Saskatchewan hosted our twelfth Provincial Heritage Fair at Government House - Saskatchewan in Regina, where awards were presented by Her Honour the Honourable Bernadette McIntyre, Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan. The 2026 Provincial Heritage Fair saw 60 students, grades 4 to 8, from various school districts across Saskatchewan present the projects they created earlier this year on Saskatchewan- or Canadian-based heritage topics to judges.

The work of the students was remarkable: they not only showed their research skills and knowledge about their chosen heritage-related topic, but also their artistic and creative talent. Congratulations to all the students for a job well done! You can find all the awards won by the students pictured below, and the top ten scoring projects, on the Heritage Fairs website: https://heritagefairssk.ca/fairs/provincial-fair

🏛️ Hustle Culture: Heritage in Saskatchewan’s Local Economies

Heritage isn’t just about preservation—it’s about participation.

This presentation explores how heritage sites across Saskatchewan are active contributors to everyday economic and social life, often in ways that go unnoticed or unmeasured. Moving beyond the idea of heritage as a static cultural asset, this research highlights how these places function as living, working parts of local economies.

Through four Saskatchewan case studies—the Margo Fournier Arts Centre (Prince Albert), Qu’Appelle Valley Centre for the Arts (Fort Qu’Appelle), The Signal Hill Collective (Weyburn), and Honeywood Heritage Nursery (near Parkside)—this session maps daily heritage operations using the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), the same framework used by Statistics Canada to track economic activity.

By applying a standardized economic lens, this research reframes heritage as dynamic, productive, and deeply embedded in community life.

👤 About the Presenter
Maha Abbas is a research intern with Heritage Saskatchewan and a community engagement professional with a background in heritage conservation and public programming. She holds an Honours BA in Architecture from the University of Toronto and focuses her research on positioning heritage as an active, integrated force in contemporary communities.

📈 Heritage works harder than we think—this session shows how.
