When he watches two of his tour guides who came through Partners in Employment, Tunnels of Moose Jaw general manager Bobby Hill doesn’t see a barrier or disability. He only sees the ability of those two to handle the highly specialized work required of a Tunnels guide.

Guides need to be able to memorize multiple 45-minute scripts for multiple tours a day with diverse audiences. So, Bobby and his team are sure to keep an open mind as to where they might find the individuals that can handle that sort of work.

“I look at it like, ‘Do we have the right people to do the jobs?’ And as it turns out, we have people from all over the world working at the Tunnels. We have people of different identities and different abilities that work at the Tunnels. I don’t look at it as a box to check, but it’s turned out that way and we have a lot of amazing employees.”

The Tunnels has been working alongside Partners for the past two years, offering employment in a couple of instances, but also providing tours and interview opportunities to other job seekers. It’s a partnership Bobby says other employers could certainly benefit from.

“It does not hurt to try and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised,” he says. “As employers, we need to be comfortable and confident with our staff who are dealing with members of the public every single day. We expect them to put out the best product, the best tour every single time. The team members that came through this program are wonderful members of our team.”

Thanks to Bobby and the Tunnels of Moose Jaw for their commitment for supported employment!

Life, Jessica says, has changed a lot for her in the years since walking through the doors at Partners in Employment.

“They’re always there to help and guide me in the right direction,” says Jessica. “Starting off, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do in life and then I came here and they guided me in the right direction.”

At one time, Jessica had gone through the Partners stream of services and even landed a job, but she wanted more out of life. So, last year, she joined the YESS (Youth Employment and Skills Strategy) program which serves individuals ages 16 to 30 experiencing disability and makes sure all aspects of life like housing and food security are taken care to make the transition to employment successful.

So, these days, Jessica finds herself working as a fashion assistant at Giant Tiger, getting ready to book her SGI road test and working with an Eagle Heart Centre mentor (after a referral from Partners) on life skills and connecting to her Indigenous culture. Going forward, she sees herself continuing to grow at Giant Tiger (where she notes the staff has created an incredibly inclusive environment) and is planning to enroll in an Early Childhood Education program through SIIT.

She credits the team at Partners for helping her expand her limits and realize all she’s capable of.

“They are always saying ‘You can do this,’ ” says Jessica.

And credit goes right back to Jessica for all the hard work and success so far! We can’t wait to see what’s next!

Though he loves riding his bike and was always washing one as a kid, the idea of working in a bicycle shop had never crossed Brhett’s mind.

At least that was the case until he was looking for opportunities after finishing work prep classes at Partners in Employment. During the job search, New Opportunities for Work facilitator Bri suggested a bike shop and something for Brhett clicked.

Soon he was job shadowing and interviewing at Western Cycle Source for Sports and quickly found himself employed washing bikes and doing other tasks around the bicycle service department.

“I’m not exactly sure what it is … it just came natural,” says Brhett, who’d done mentorship experiences at a few other businesses looking to find the right fit for himself. “It’s the entire environment, really – seeing all the different types of bikes and how they get fixed.”

He has taken to the work so well that his supervisors sometimes have trouble keeping him occupied since Brhett is getting through tasks so efficiently.

“I could use three more guys just like him,” says service manager John. “He fit right in. The guys are super happy with the work he produces and he’s super hard working.”

Working with Partners’ job seekers came natural for the Team at Western Cycle, too. As a business that has been in Regina since 1912 and owned by the same family since the 1970s, Western Cycle aims to be a true part of the community and have a team that’s reflective of the community too.

“For me it comes back to something I always say: ‘Everybody has something,’ ” says John. “But that also means everybody can give something.”

Brhett is proving that and more! Congrats on all the success so far and thanks to Western Cycle - Bike Shop for being a truly inclusive employer!

Matthew has found his own little piece of employment paradise.

Matthew originally came to Partners in Employment while struggling to find work. He found his shyness was always getting in the way of landing interviews.

But at Partners, he learned ways to overcome that shyness in job interviews and showcase all he could bring to a role.

Around the same time, Partners had approached the team at Paradise LeisureScapes, which didn’t have any openings at the time. But when a pool filter maintenance/warehouse position came up in January, internal general manager Trina reached back out to Partners to see if they had anyone in mind who might be a fit.

Matthew came for an interview, job shadowed for a day, and landed the gig.

“Matthew has been an absolute dream employee,” says Trina. “It takes a special kind of person to pay attention to the detail needed in filter cleaning and quality control. He’s been instrumental in our team.”

He didn’t exactly ease into the role like a nice warm pool, either. He started with 256 filters that needed cleaning.

“And he was amazing on getting them done and making sure they were done properly,” says Trina.

Hearing that was music to Matthew’s ears after the journey to employment he has been on.

“It was starting to get really hard to find work and Partners really helped me out,” he says. “It’s been a great experience.”

Carter is ready to hit the road solo.

After going through all the services provided at Partners in Employment offers, Carter is continuing his career without our support – exactly what we hope for when we work with a job seeker to find a new role and then assist in the transition to employment.

Carter has been working in fleet services at SaskTel for two years, delivering vehicles across the province and doing various other jobs in the Regina shop to allow technicians to focus on their trade.

“I went through the process, and it was a bit of a bumpy start for everyone involved but with (job coach) Derek’s assistance and SaskTel managers, the past two years have been great. Now having completed the program, it feels really good to know I am fully independent,” says Carter.

During that time, he’s had Derek around to keep him focused on his work and manage through any issues that arose. It helped get Carter to a place where it a smooth transition when it was time for the support to end.

“I was ready to let it go,” he says. “I was prepared.”

And the change has been equally easy for Devin, Carter’s manager in fleet services. “Derek was great and we started seeing him less and less as he was needed less and less, so it’s been a very good transition,” he says.

So, now Carter is ready to continue on his own, travelling the province with SaskTel fleet services. And wherever the road takes him, he knows where he can turn if he hits any more bumps along the way.

“If ever I need to go back, I know I can just phone and Partners will be there to still support me.”

Congrats Carter and good luck on the road ahead!

“It’s rewarding to see someone’s world grow.”

It’s Disability Service Professionals Week and we’re celebrating some of the individuals at SaskAbilities helping create more inclusive communities for everyone.

Growing up, it was instilled in Derek that every profession – no matter how big or small – was important.

It’s a lesson he carried with him while working his way through school in cleaning jobs, detailing cars or stocking shelves and as he climbed the ranks of the banking industry.

“We always dream of being lawyers, doctors, NHL players,” he says. “But our family was focused on: Everything matters.”

When life brought him home to Regina from Toronto some years ago, he did a short contract stint doing administrative work at Partners in Employment and “I just loved it,” he says.

He was lured back to banking for a time, but always had Partners in mind. He made the move back in 2021 as a job developer, working with job seekers to find the right role for them. During that time, he helped one individual who is visually impaired learn to independently navigate a dish-washing job. That, his varied work history and the lessons he learned growing up, all led him to his current role as job coach/job maintenance coordinator.

It’s a role that requires problem solving and flexibility as he works with newly hired clients and their new employers to ensure a smooth transition into the new job.

“Sometimes my role is the cherry on top, helping someone make that final step into independence,” he says. “Other times I may be more involved in helping build the full foundation.”

And, ideally, all the work done by that client, the employer and the team at Partners leads to the individual “graduating” from services.

“It is a really proud moment,” says Derek. “It’s rewarding to see someone’s world grow — from being at home or in a program, to being out in the community contributing in their own way.”

Watching William chat with a steady stream of lotto customers one lunch hour at Shoppers Drug Mart, you’d never suspect he once struggled with his confidence or experienced anxiety.
But that’s what led him one day to Partners in Employment in Moose Jaw.
There were times in the past when a full parking lot would make it difficult to enter public spaces, creating a barrier to employment. But through Partners in Employment, William was able to build his confidence.
“I learned to be more open such as looking for the positives on every situation,” he says.
He was even confident enough to apply at Shoppers on his own and land a job in the front of the store where he’s now interacting with customers every shift.
“He has developed so much since he’s been here,” says front store manager Karlie, noting that based on her experience with William, she would absolutely turn to Partners again for finding candidates. “Now he approaches customers, says hello as soon as they walk in the doors. He’s forward thinking. He’s a great employee … a great employee.”
William feels the change too. He says his confidence issues are gone and he loves being around his co-workers.
“I’m more independent in life and am making steps to be more responsible,” he says.
It’s something he thinks Partners can do for others too.
“Do it; they help,” he says when asked what he’d tell other job seekers about Partners. “It may not be the fastest process, but it is going to help you get skills and ability you’re missing to get a job.”
Congrats to William on all the success so far! We can’t wait to see what else lies ahead!

Big thanks to Brianna from We An-Ser call centres for spending some time with Partners in Employment job seekers this week. After a short presentation, she did interviews with nine job seekers, even taking a break at one point to call her boss to say how fantastic the candidates were.

Sessions like this are a huge benefit to employers and job seekers alike. Individuals can get to know more about an industry and consider if it might be an interest for them. And employers can get a headstart on the hiring process by meeting committed job seekers who could be future employees.
