On International Women in Engineering Day, APEGS is recognizing the women helping shape the future of engineering in Saskatchewan and across Canada. 👷‍♀️

Women remain significantly underrepresented in the engineering profession, despite making up more than half of Canada’s population. Increasing representation matters because diverse perspectives lead to stronger problem-solving, better innovation, and a profession that better reflects the communities it serves.

As the engineering regulator in Saskatchewan, APEGS supports efforts to create a more inclusive profession through initiatives like Engineers Canada | Ingénieurs Canada’s 30 by 30 goal, which aims to raise the percentage of newly licensed engineers who are women to 30% by 2030.

APEGS is proud to recognize AECOM Canada Ltd., Associated Engineering, and ATAP Infrastructure Management as this year’s recipients of the Exceptional Engineering/Geoscience Project Award! 🏅

Founded in 2001, this award recognizes projects of great significance led by predominantly Saskatchewan-based engineers and geoscientists whose work demonstrates exceptional accomplishment in engineering and/or geoscience.

This year’s award honours the teams behind the Northern Village of Denare Beach Wildfire Disaster Recovery project. Following devastating wildfire damage, these professionals mobilized quickly to assess infrastructure, restore essential municipal systems, manage hazardous debris, and support the community’s safe recovery and rebuilding efforts.

Through collaboration across multiple engineering and environmental disciplines, the teams helped establish a new benchmark for technically rigorous, environmentally responsible disaster recovery in Canada.

Mining in Saskatchewan starts long before extraction. It starts with geoscience. 🌍

APEGS members play an important role in identifying resources, understanding geology, supporting environmental planning, and helping mining projects move forward responsibly and sustainably across the province.

As we celebrate Saskatchewan Mining Week, we’re recognizing the geoscientists contributing to an industry that continues to shape Saskatchewan’s economy, communities, and future.

Meet the new APEGS President, Nicholas C. Kaminski, P.Eng.!

A structural engineer and University of Saskatchewan graduate, Nicholas has built his career across a wide range of projects, from schools and water treatment plants to the inspection and retrofit of heavy industrial structures. He credits the variety of his work, and the mentors who shaped him along the way, for keeping him challenged and motivated.

On stepping into the presidency, Nicholas shared:

"I feel incredibly fortunate to be given the opportunity to serve the public and our membership in this role. I look forward to working with my fellow council members and staff to continue delivering the mandate set out in the act."

Are you practising within your area of competence when it comes to helical pile foundations?

Helical (screw) pile systems are high-risk, engineered foundations requiring specialized geotechnical and structural knowledge. Recently, APEGS has seen a growing number of discipline cases involving improper design, insufficient oversight, and work performed outside members' areas of competence.

Earlier this month, the 96th APEGS Annual Meeting and Professional Development Conference brought together engineers and geoscientists from across Saskatchewan for two days of learning, connection, and some genuinely thought-provoking conversations.

Highlights included keynotes from Ivan Joseph, Cadmus Delorme, and Fotini Iconomopoulos, eight technical track sessions covering everything from engineering ethics to emerging energy systems, the President's Reception, and the induction of our 2026/27 Council.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Saskatoon or tuned in virtually, and to all the speakers and session leads who made it possible. See you at #97! 🎉
