In Alberta they made it easier to get a question on the ballot and the government is driving the October 19 vote. In Saskatchewan the signature threshold is higher, there’s no big government referendum scheduled, and any vote would still face the exact same wall: it can’t just happen — it needs clear question, strong support, negotiations with Ottawa and First Nations, and a constitutional change. We can’t jump straight to ‘yes/no on leaving’ for the same legal reasons you’re seeing in Alberta.

There is misinformation being circulated about how petitions and referendums work in Saskatchewan, and it needs to be corrected.

A petition — no matter how many signatures — does NOT create a legal mandate for a referendum or override Saskatchewan’s legislated process.

The claim that “10% of voter turnout equals a mandate” is not based in law or any recognized referendum frameworkin this province.

Petitions are a form of public expression, not legal authority. They can show support, but they do not compel government action outside of the established legislative process.

Spreading incorrect information like this only creates confusion and undermines serious discussion on the issue.

Accuracy matters.
