Happy World Teachers’ Day! 🎶🍎

My dad was a band teacher for 30 years, and he was also my very first music teacher — and I’ll be biased and say the best. ❤️

So, teachers: I see you. Thank you for everything you do, especially in the midst of the challenges facing public educators right now. The lessons you teach go far beyond the classroom, and you never quite know which moments your students will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

And because music teachers deserve a little extra love from this former band kid…

These last couple of years, my circle has gotten smaller—and I’m thankful for that.

In domestic violence, people talking about you instead of to you isn’t just gossip. When information gets carried back to an abuser or to the people enabling them—the “flying monkeys”—it can become dangerous.

Protecting your privacy, your story, and your circle matters.

After everything I’ve learned and lived through, I am not at all shocked by what I just finished watching in the on Netflix.

Sometimes a smaller circle is a safer one.

I was told I wasn’t normal.

I was judged.
I was gossiped about.
People talked about me—and some still do—instead of talking to me.

Domestic abuse is incredibly damaging. But I am not broken. There is nothing wrong with me. What is wrong is what has been happening to me.

A justice system where access to justice can depend on who has the money is broken.

People calling themselves pastors have told me that I am the problem, while those who support my perpetrator face no consequences.

So, kindly:

Stop gossiping about survivors.
Stop judging their responses to trauma.
Stop talking about them instead of to them.

Start listening.

Victims and survivors of domestic violence do not need more judgment from the very people and systems that are supposed to help them.

Believe them. Listen to them. Stand beside them.
