PLAYER SPOTLIGHT | CRYSTAL BITTMAN
Some seasons are measured by wins.
Others are measured by growth.
For Crystal Bittman, this season became about rebuilding confidence, rediscovering her love for the game, and learning just how much strength can come from working through the difficult moments.
Over the past few years, Crystal has put serious work into both her throwing mechanics and the mental side of her game. After Nationals in British Columbia, though, she found herself struggling with confidence and even questioning whether she still loved playing co****le.
She knew something had to change.
That meant looking beyond just the bags and boards. Crystal began focusing on her throw, her mindset, her health and her overall wellness.
She also speaks openly about something that doesn’t get talked about enough in sport: the challenges women can experience through perimenopause and menopause.
The changes in mood, social-emotional health, cognition and endurance are real, and Crystal realized that if co****le was going to continue being part of her life, the game needed to remain a positive place for her.
Through it all, Crystal continued representing her home club, The Backyard at SCA, while putting herself into competitive environments and new challenges, including competing in Lady Boss of the Toss.
By the time Alberta and Ontario Nationals came around, things were moving in the right direction.
Her approach became simpler:
Play my game.
Have fun.
Remember it’s just a game.
One bag at a time.
Because ultimately, as Crystal puts it, when she steps up to the line, it’s just her and her bag.
There were still moments at Nationals this year when the pressure brought back some old habits. But instead of letting those moments take over, she worked on recognizing them, making corrections and staying positive in the moment.
And she knows the work isn’t finished.
Heading into 2027, Crystal wants to continue improving both her throw and her mindset while adding new skills to her game.
But perhaps the biggest thing she’s taken from co****le has nothing to do with wins and losses.
Every game, every tournament and every difficult moment has taught her something about herself — about her game, her resilience and what she is capable of overcoming.
And in Crystal’s words, those experiences have helped make her a better human.
“I’m thankful for all the co****le moments and gameplay. Each moment has taught me something about myself, my gameplay, and the many forms of resilience I hold.”
Thank you, Crystal, for sharing your story and for being willing to speak openly about both the good moments and the difficult ones.
There’s a lot more to this game than four bags and a board.
Sometimes it teaches us a little bit about ourselves too.
One bag at a time.
