It's time to take action for public transit! Let's tell Regina City Council NOT to approve a 10% transit fare hike. They will vote on this on February 25th. Let's flood their email inboxes, let's sign a petition, let's write LOVE LETTERS TO REGINA PUBLIC TRANSIT for Valentine's Day! Read on for more info and other ways you can help.

This motion to increase transit fares is happening despite record ridership. Nearly 9 million rides in 2025, the highest in the city's history. Regina already charges the highest fares among peer cities while investing the least per capita on transit.

For students, seniors, workers, newcomers, and families who depend on the bus, this hike is a real barrier. Transit is how people get to work, to school, to appointments, to everything. It should be accessible to everyone.

It also undermines the city's own climate plan. The City's Energy and Sustainability Framework identifies increasing transit use as one of seven "Big Moves" required to meet net zero. Transportation accounts for 24% of Regina's greenhouse gas emissions. The Framework calls for expanded service to encourage a 25% transit mode share. A 10% fare hike does the opposite: it risks suppressing ridership at the exact moment the city should be getting people out of cars and onto buses.

This Valentine's Day, we're asking people to write love letters to transit and post them online. Tag city councillors. Let them see what the bus means to this city.

Here are four ways you can help:

1. Post a love letter to transit. Write a sentence or two about what transit means to you, snap a photo, and post it to social media. Tag the Mayor, your Councillor, and the City of Regina. Use and .

2. Sign the petition -- link in the comments

3. Take 30 seconds to send Council an email -- link in the comments

4. Share this with friends and family. We need more voices before the vote later this month!

Council is voting soon - Let's make sure they hear from us first!

Please read and share widely! October 24 is the International Day for Climate Justice. A group of Regina youth are holding a climate rally to call on all levels of government; municipal, federal and provincial to urgently take action on climate change. Here's their message:

Too often governments live in the present. They’re consumed with responding to immediate financial pressures and make excuses for ignoring the long-term impacts of human made climate change. As a result of decades of inaction, these impacts are now immediate, urgent and very much in the present.

We call on the City of Regina to immediately make more funding available to support its own Sustainability Framework! We call on the provincial government to take action to commit to its own prairie resilience plan, to invest deeply in renewable energy, as well as to commit to its obligation to move away from coal based power. We call on the federal government to implement bold environmental protections and regulations that will allow it to fulfil its own obligations under the Paris climate accord.

A win!

Yesterday, City Council passed Ward 8 Councillor Shanon Zachidniak’s motion to purchase hybrid buses rather than diesel!

Hybrid buses emit only four more tonnes of GHG annually than electric buses: “They produce 55 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, compared to 81 tonnes by a diesel bus or 51 tonnes by an electric bus.” Check out the full story at The Leader Post.

While we take this as a win, it’s important to note that the City had originally committed to purchasing new electric buses, a decision that aligns with both the Energy and Sustainabilty Framework and the Transit Master Plan. Also, we still need to see SaskPower working faster towards greening our electric grid in order for future electric fleet purchases to provide the best climate-action bang for their buck. Our work isn’t over… yet!

For now, this is something to celebrate. Thank you to all RET members and Regina citizens who contributed to this win. Our recent emails to Council and delegations at Council meetings have made a difference!

Hello RET supporters!

We are mobilizing in support a climate action in Regina and need your help!

Councilor Shanon Zachidniak’s motion in front of city council on September 10 is looking at different revenue streams to financially support the Energy and Sustainability Framework — our plan to make Regina a more sustainable and inclusive city. We need you to email council.

The Smart Investments for a Sustainable Regina recommends administration:
• Reallocation of Carbon Tax Expenses saved to support initiative in the framework — such as emissions reductions, energy efficiency, renewable energy, conservation, and climate adaptation infrastructure.

• Review and recommend additional tools to fund and accelerate sustainability efforts, including but not limited to:
Updating Regina’s stormwater utility fees,
Developing targeted, time-limited tax exemptions for individuals and businesses that adopt clean technologies such as building retrofits, solar installations, and vehicle fleet electrification;
adjustments to Regina’s parking fine structure, with new revenues supporting the electrification Regina Transit’s fleet.
and create a Community Advisory Group inclusive of residents, businesses, Indigenous leaders, and sustainability experts

The City has reported there are limited financial resources that pose a significant challenge to the City’s ability to advance the Framework. Advancing the Framework requires significant and sustained financial resources.

Additionally, September 24 council will be discussing whether or not to purchase diesel, hybrid or electric buses. Administration’s current recommendation is to purchase diesel buses and increase global heating emission. We need to show city council that diesel buses violate the Energy and Sustainability Framework policies.

Please email council using the tool provided.
