Here's a blast from the past from the years 2010 and 2011... All Harvards!

In 2010 as a 12 year old starting my journey in aviation I first became privy to the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum in Brandon Mb. This first visit was a very influential visit for me, as it planted the first ideas in my head that would years later go on to inspire me to create this page, have my own stories published, and of course create content all about aviation and aviators.

Couldn't recommend this museum enough solely because of the impact it had on what I do today. Hoping I'll be able to come back to the museum somewhat soon to provide some much needed updated photos (and maybe some other content, I think the museum is due for a dedicated blog review and other goodies 😀)...

Due to the extremely delicate structure of the Lunar Roving Vehicle, Apollo crews were warned to drive the LRV with great caution. Strict speed limits were placed on the 1 horsepower vehicle at an absolute maximum of 8mph to ensure the maintenance of proper safety during lunar surface excursions.

Almost 250 thousand miles from the nearest tow truck or medical facility, astronauts had to exercise extreme caution.

Here's a plane that's very rarely talked about...

The Douglas B-18 Bolo, or in Canadian service known as the Digby Mk 1.

Not as well known as other medium bombers such as the B-25 Mitchell, the Digby was more or less relegated to being a footnote in aviation history. This fact comes as a surprise, with the aircraft in question being a close relative of the Douglas DC-2, which itself evolved into the DC-3. The B-18 saw very little combat with the Americans outside of the immediate attacks on the Phillipines and Pearl Harbor (of which the majority of B-18s involved were destroyed on the ground), and apart from sinking a single U-boat in the Carribean in 1942 American aircraft saw no further action and were relegated to training and transport duties for the rest of the war.

As for aircraft in Canadian service, all 20 were issued to 10 Squadron and were used exclusively for anti-submarine patrols on the east coast from 1940 to around 1942 or 1943. Digby crews recorded 11 attacks against U-boats, of which U-520 was confirmed sunk on October 30 1942 east of Newfoundland. By 1943 the Digby was outdated and superseded by the B-24 Liberator, which offered a much longer range and larger payload. Some of the remaining Digbys were converted to transports or trainers and were retired sometime before or after the immediate end of the war. Whether any survived on the civilian market postwar or were scrapped is a total mystery to me, but if anyone knows if any Digbys survived beyond 1945 please let me know!
