Vera Saltzman (she/her) is a photographer based on Treaty 4 territory near Fort Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan. Vera grew up on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, and her vision is shaped by her experiences of relocation, belonging, and personal history. Her work explores the Saskatchewan landscape, its people, and the vernacular of place. Most recently, she has examined what it is to have a meaningful relationship with the land itself.

The Colleen and Allan Bailey Memorial Fund Award supports and assists emerging Saskatchewan writers as they develop their craft and share their stories with the world.

To date, eight Saskatchewan authors have received this award, carrying forward a legacy of creativity, encouragement, and artistic excellence.

We are now accepting submissions for the 2026 John V. Hicks Long Manuscript Award in Literary Nonfiction.

This award contest accepts unpublished full-length literary nonfiction manuscripts. Prose submissions are welcome in, but are not limited to, these creative nonfiction subgenres: memoir, biography, historical investigation, literary journalism, political commentary, social or cultural criticism and essays that are personal, lyric or narrative. We will not accept nonfiction work that is technical or instructional work, conventional newspaper reportage or nonfiction work characterized by a neutral (so-called objective) third-person perspective.

Prizes are:
1st place: $1,000
2nd place: $650
3rd place: $350

Born and raised in Saskatchewan, Claire Kramer was a patron and supporter of the arts, a booklover and founding trustee of the Saskatchewan Foundation For the Arts. She established the Glengarry Book Award in 2021.

Claire realized her dream to recognize and encourage Saskatchewan authors. She shared, “Saskatchewan has a history of producing renowned writers who have made significant contributions to literature in Canada. I am delighted to establish this annual award in support of literary excellence from or influenced by living in our province.”

$100,000 has now been awarded to five deserving authors. ($20,000 annually).
