The Redwater Citizen's on Patrol donated $250.00 to the Party Program hosted by Sturgeon County. This program has a great reputation for helping young people make good choices regarding impaired driving, poor decision making and peer pressure or support. Over 500 youth will take part in the program on April 29th and 30th in Morinville. Secretary Treasurer Sophie Smith, Sturgeon Safety Liaison Jennifer Penner and Vice Chair Jan Cosby are shown exchanging the cheque.

Good morning, and welcome to inconsistent weather and the latest from Redwater COP. Last night Sophie, Jan and I visited the Sturgeon Rural Crime Watch group as they hosted their Annual General Meeting and provided great SCAM BUSTER tips. The rural crime watch program has been active for many years both in Sturgeon and Thorhild Counties. The evening's program began with a great presentation by Julie Matthews Consumer Protection Expert & Fraud Prevention Educator. The stories and tips that Julie provided to the audience were eye opening and certainly made one think twice about email attachments, unsolicited phone calls, Bit Coin/Crypto, gift cards and AI. Overall a great opportunity to meet another support group and their members, to learn valuable information and to hear about different programs and actions this active group is undertaking.
A special event during their AGM was the awarding of the Fred Scharmann award to Suzie and Dan Derouin for "Outstanding Volunteer Service of the Sturgeon Rural Crime Watch Program." What was so special about this award was that many years ago, when I was a very young Mountie, Suzie was a strong supporter of the Rural Crime Watch program running out of the Redwater Detachment. Over the years her support included President, Vice President, Secretary and when Victim Services came along Suzie was there to support that. Congratulations to a very deserving couple.
Last month our group provided almost 50 hours of volunteer service for the COP group and Redwater. This included over 125 kms of patrols and a number of local events. President Henry and Vice President Jan attended the Town Council meeting on February 24th to provide assistance to the RCMP and the Council for establishing policing priorities in 2026/2027. Overall a busy month with a busier March ahead of us.

Good morning everyone. This reminder is that you only have two more days to fill in your Policing Priorities survey that is on the Town of Redwater's web page. Visit the town's main page and then click on the link on the left. The survey takes about 5 minutes tops and captures your thoughts about the policing picture in Redwater. As the community must now pay the Provincial Government for policing we have a stronger voice in advocating for focused efforts in crime prevention, reduction and enforcement.

Senior Scams and Frauds are common place in today's social structure. Despite continued warnings and information sharing it seems like every week you hear about someone else falling for the gift card, CRA, Grandparent or even the driveway sealing fraud. Hopefully this information from Pincher Creek RCMP will help keep seniors safe in our area. Share it with folks you know and love as you might just be protecting them. Make sure you can be that trusted person they can reach out if they feel victimized. Sorry for the cut and paste job but my computer skills won't let me alter my font size in my emails.

Today was Coffee with a Cop at the Pioneer Club. This was a rescheduled event and there were 28 people in attendance. The audience had great questions ranging from commercial trucking, drugs, property crimes, area covered and persons crimes. Cpl. Dillon Vahey was supported by two of the Detachment members who kept everyone interested with anecdotal comments and lots of interesting facts. If you missed this event come to the next event scheduled for March 3rd, 2026 at 10:00 am at Tim Hortons. Everyone is welcome.
Last night Redwater Citizens on Patrol AGM saw the election of an executive for the coming year. Henry Goeckel is the President, Jan Cosby is the Vice President and Sophie Smith is the Secretary/Treasurer. COP is in need of new members and if you are interested contact one of the group who will gladly take you for a coffee and explain what we do, how it is done and when we do it. The only commitment the group is asking for is one patrol a month which is about 4 hours. Patrols can take place anytime of the day or night and can be done in the COP truck, on bicycle or walking. The COP meetings are held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 7:00 pm at the Redwater Legion.
Watch for information coming from the Town of Redwater on "POLICING PRIORITIES" and if you check the agenda package for the Town Council meeting of February 17th, 2026 you can see the up to date report from the local RCMP on crime statistics in our area.

Good afternoon and welcome from the Redwater Citizens on Patrol. January was a busy month for the group as several events were attended by the group volunteers and the weather was better suited for patrols.

Members of the group attended to the open house presented by Sturgeon County for their policing priorities for the upcoming year. Given Sturgeon County has three Detachment Commanders within their boundaries is was a great opportunity for those in attendance to see how things like Detachment Boundaries have little or no affect on the criminals, nor does it impair enforcement ability. Crimes in each area mirrored an overall crime picture. Also, unlike many of the American enforcement jurisdictions, officers are not restricted to a geographical area and often provide quick investigative support to another Detachment because they are closer. Great presentation and information session.

Coffee with a cop continues to be popular as COP members and the general public converse one on one with members of the Redwater Detachment. It is really interesting to see how different issues affect individuals in various ways. One size does not fit all when it comes to criminal impact.

Overall patrols picked up with members patrolling for 10hours and travelling just over 86 kms in town. In addition volunteers logged an additional 15 hours at the mentioned events and administration took a chunk of time as well.

Two quick updates: One is remember Coffee with a Cop this month is Thursday February 19th at the Redwater and District Pioneer Club. Bring your questions and meet some of the Detachment members.
The second is the group is looking at improving membership numbers. Ride Alongs have been ruled out by our insurers but look for upcoming information on how you could "SEE" what we do and how easy it is to do it.

Until next time!

Did you know that every year the local RCMP seek input on what their policing priorities should be for the upcoming year. As Sturgeon County has three policing jurisdictions within their boundaries, Redwater, Morinville and Fort Saskatchewan, they are holding a virtual input session that anyone can support. Here is the poster and the QR Code that will allow you to view online or if you are interested in joining others you can attend at the Redwater Legion. Redwater Detachment will also be soliciting input later in the year for Redwater's Policing Prioroties so watch for your opportunity to help support the local Detachment.

December was very cold which restricted some of the patrol activity by the group's volunteers. In total 6 hours of patrols covered 58 kms. In addition to that the club provided a decorated tree for the Festival of Trees event at Pembina Place.

With November behind us it is time to focus on December and the busy Christmas season. There are many safety tips for this time of year but here are just a few:

1) Store purchases in the trunk of your car or out of site in trucks and SUVs. Throw blankets or tinted windows help.

2) Be smart and discreet when using ATMs. Front pants pockets help protect your cash. Use cross body strap style purses, with zipper pouches facing your body, loosely covered by your arm when walking and never hang it on the back of a chair in restaurants or open seating areas.

3) Plan your travel route to minimize fatigue, carry emergency supplies and let someone know your route, your departure time, any enroute delays and details of the vehicle your are driving.

4) Around the house be aware of electrical hazards with decorations. Keep trees, decorations and gifts at least 3' from heat sources and make sure to water live trees every day to keep them fresh and reduce combustability.

5) At night, or when you are away from the house, turn off decorations and trees and ensure candles are really out. Always use indoor or outdoor lights for their intended purposes and check for frayed or damaged wiring before setting up displays.

6) Be "food smart" by making sure food is properly cooked, left overs properly stored and stoves are turned off after use. Remember little ones can be inquisitive and may reach up or put things in their mouth.

Redwater COP patrolled 117.8 kms over 11.3 volunteer hours in November as well as 4 hours at COP events like Coffee with a Cop and 15 hours completing reporting and updates for ACOPA.
