Do you love or hate e-bikes and scooters? Because things may be about to change as far how they are regulated. 🚲⚡
The Policing Committee is meeting on Wednesday, April 29 will be voting on resolutions to bring forward to the Alberta Association of Police Governance (AAPG) 2026 AGM, including one focused on e-bikes, e-scooters, and other small electric mobility devices.
Here’s what’s behind it:
• Alberta’s current definition of a “power bicycle” still references a federal rule that no longer exists
• Shared e-scooters operate under exemptions, while privately owned scooters fall under different rules
• Some devices fall into grey areas depending on speed, power, or design
• Municipalities have limited authority to manage how these are used locally
👉 The resolution is asking the Province to update the framework
👉 Create clear definitions for e-bikes, scooters, and similar devices
👉 Establish consistent rules for use and safety
👉 Give municipalities more ability to regulate locally
Also being considered: funding for Police and Crisis Teams (PACT)
• Teams pair police with mental health professionals
• Help reduce pressure on ERs and the justice system
• Demand is growing, and many areas are already stretched
👉 The ask is for more stable and expanded provincial funding to support these teams
If approved, these would be submitted through AAPG to advocate to the Province.
Sharing so you know what’s being discussed.
