Red Deer Players Society

Red Deer Players Society Accepting new scripts until June 15th We provide opportunities for people of all ages to participate in, and be entertained by, diverse theatrical activities.

We are an active Community Theatre group participating in diverse theatrical activities for our own enjoyment and for the entertainment of the wider community. The Red Deer Players Society (RDP) is a charitable not-for-profit community theatre group based in Red Deer Alberta. We first came together in early 2014 to stage a Reader’s Theatre production. We decided that we’d like a theatrical society

that gave as much attention to our theatrical community as it did to the presentation of theatre productions. The founders all had considerable experience of working with other theatre groups, both in Red Deer and elsewhere. We have incorporated the society as a not-for-profit and became a registered charity in July 2015.

Theatre is booming in Central Alberta, but where have all the directors gone? https://www.sylvanlaketheatre.com/directors-bootcamp Noting a serious lack of theatre directors and zero training available, three local theatres have come together to do something about it. Next January Sylvan Lake Theatre is offering The Directors Bootcamp with director/teacher Tanya Ryga. In March the Bootcamp moves to Red Deer, where Jeremy Robinson (Central Alberta Theatre) and Katherine Orsten (Red Deer Players Society) join the fun. Juggling actor auditions, rehearsals, production and design are all part of the learning experience for the emerging directors and their mentors will make sure that they are ready for the Spring On Stage Play Festival which tours in early May. Congratulations to our 2026 recipient!

Kait Shaw is a student graduating from LTCHS and is pursuing Musical Theatre at MacEwan University starting this September. Kait has been taking part in theatre for three years, from performing, directing, and doing tech, most recently playing Katherine in Newsies!

Kait will be putting this money towards tuition for post secondary. Theatre has been her life and greatest joy for as long as she can remember, and that love continues to grow. She encourages anyone questioning if they should take the risk of theatre to do what they love.

Thank you for continuing Carole’s legacy of community in the theatre arts!

Let’s play with set design! 🎨 Did you know theatre can do so much more than recreate realistic walls, living rooms, and furniture? Join us Saturday May 30th at 1pm for this free, all-ages, all-skill-level workshop exploring how colour, texture, shape, and symbolism can create a dynamic storytelling space.

Workshop instructor Lacey Oleson-Rinehart will guide participants through hands-on exercises using art supplies to discover how simple forms can create a complex effect. Together, we’ll explore how abstract design can evoke mood, suggest location, support movement, and spark audience imagination… often with a smaller budget and bigger impact than literal realism.

Perfect for aspiring set designers, directors, playwrights, and curious theatre-makers looking to broaden their creative toolkit. Admission is free, with pay-what-you-will donations accepted afterward.

✍️What was on Jeremy Robinson's mind while he worked on "After the Garden"🌱, our next Breaking Cover Sunday May 3rd!

"I wrote this play initially out of interest in religion as a subject. Through the process, I would often return to the story of Adam and Eve for context. Whenever I thought about Eve getting punished for eating from the tree of knowledge, my thought was always "what did she do that was so wrong?" I like to think this question colored my current iteration of the play and motivated it into becoming a story about freedom of choice, thinking for yourselves, and that knowledge shouldn't be seen as a bad thing.

I also cannot say I wasn't influenced by the current state of the world. It sometimes feels as if we are living in a culture that breeds ignorance and those spreading that message lack any belief system whatsoever. In this case I did want to make a statement about how this type of ignorance encourages anti-intellectualism which I think has gotten us into the trouble we see ourselves today. I made a conscious effort not to be subtle about this message because I did feel I had something to say on the matter.

Overall though I always tried to follow where the characters led me. This probably influenced me more than anything. It was a joy discovering who these characters were, what motivated them, and how they shaped the story. It sometimes surprised, and delighted me.

I wanted this to be a positive story about believing in something, believing in others, and believing in yourself. And how fighting for the things you believe in can warrant a little corner of heaven for yourself."

Come find out what happens "After The Garden", on Sunday May 3rd at the Red Deer Public Library... Admission is free, and there will be a talkback with the playwright afterwards!
