Today is National Peacekeepers Day. It was chosen to honour the deaths of 9 Peacekeepers killed in the line of duty on 9 August 1974 when their Buffalo aircraft (115461) flying from Beirut, Lebanon to Damascus, Syria was shot down by a Syrian surface-to-air missile, The Syrians claim it was an accident in that the Buffalo had shown up on their radar as an Israeli enemy aircraft in an ‘attack profile’ heading towards Damascus. The Buffalo crashed near the village of Diemas, Lebanon. It was the worst loss of Canadian Peacekeepers in one incident.

Captain George Foster, 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron, born Calgary, AB
Captain Keith Mirau, 424 Transport and Rescue Squadron, born Swift Current, SK
Captain Robert Wicks, 424 Transport and Rescue Squadron, born London, ON
Master Warrant Officer Cyril Korejwo, The Royal Canadian Regiment, born Czarne, Poland
Master Warrant Officer Gaston Landry, Royal 22e Régiment, born St-Francois d’Assisse, QC
Master Corporal Ron Spencer, 424 Transport and Rescue Squadron, born Montreal, QC
Corporal Morris Kennington, Logistics Branch, born Cornwall, England
Corporal Michael Simpson, Logistics Branch, born Toronto, ON
Corporal Bruce Stringer, 424 Transport and Rescue Squadron, born Kitchener, ON

Tragically this is not the only loss of life that occurred while serving as Peacekeepers; around 130 CAF personnel have been killed on Peacekeeping missions, with many more suffering physical and mental injuries.

At our Military History Museum, we tell the true, good bad and ugly side of history. We promise to never forget.

This following is taken ftom "The True Face of War" page.

"During World War II, Imperial Japanese forces widely used helpless civilians and prisoners of war as live targets for bayonet practice. These brutal methods were employed to harden new recruits, break their psychological inhibitions against killing, and instill ruthlessness, reflecting an institutionalized culture of cruelty approved and overseen by military authorities.
Post-war investigations and primary documents, including the confessions of former Japanese soldiers and war criminals, verified that units supplied live captives for recruit training.
During campaigns such as the Nanjing Massacre, unarmed prisoners and local peasants were routinely bound and used in bayonet drills.
Allied tribunals, including the trials for war crimes in the Philippines and other occupied territories, documented testimonies confirming that both civilian captives and Allied prisoners of war suffered this fate."

On August 4, 1944, Anne Frank, her family, and four other Jewish people hiding in the Secret Annex above her father's business in Amsterdam were discovered after an anonymous tip led German authorities to their hiding place. They had lived there in secrecy for more than 25 months, relying on a small group of trusted helpers who risked their own lives to bring them food and supplies.

Just three days earlier, Anne had written the final entry in the diary she received for her 13th birthday. After their arrest, the group was deported through a series of camps. Anne and her sister Margot Frank died of typhus at Bergen-Belsen in early 1945, only weeks before the camp was liberated. Her father, Otto Frank, was the family's only survivor.

After the war, Otto Frank received Anne's diary from Miep Gies, one of the people who had helped hide the family. First published in 1947, The Diary of Anne Frank has since been translated into dozens of languages and remains one of the world's most widely read firsthand accounts of the Holocaust.

The work we do at Veterans Voices of Canada-Military History Museum is important, and many people undestand the importance of honouring our history, and the honourable history makers.

At Veterans Voices of Canada and since 2005, we honour history and more importantly, our honourable heroes of history.
At our Military History Museum in Red Deer, we may be a small museum, but we're packed with unique and important local(and not so local) history.
Included is our display and story of Pte John Hill who was a soldier of the Winnipeg Grenadiers. Wounded and captured at the Battle of Hong Kong on Dec. 25th 1941, he spent almost 4 years in Japanese captivity. We are honoured to have on display many of his artifscts which help tell part of his important story,. This includes his uniform, prisoner utensils,and letters to and from his family in Winnipeg, MB.
Another true hero of Canada's Greatest Generation.
