Flood mapping momentum continues!

The Government of Alberta has launched 10 new flood studies, including the Eckville Flood Study. This study will assess and identify flood hazards along 18 km of the Medicine River and 7 km of Lasthill Creek through Eckville, Lacombe County, and Red Deer County.

Work on all components is in early stages, with on-the-ground surveys beginning soon. The study is expected to be complete by Spring 2027.

Planning a trip to the mountains this weekend? 🏔️

River flows in the Upper Red Deer River basin are currently elevated and conditions can change quickly with warm weather and rainfall.

Before heading out to hike, camp, fish, paddle, or explore, check current river conditions on the Alberta Rivers online website or app. For the Upper Red Deer River, two of the best stations to monitor are:

📍 Red Deer River above Panther River
📍 Red Deer River below Burnt Timber Creek

Knowing the conditions before you go can help you make informed decisions and stay safe around fast-moving water.

📱 Check the Alberta Rivers App before you head out.

Extreme heat events are becoming more frequent and severe across Alberta, creating increasing risks to health and well-being. Shared awareness and access to resources are important for reducing preventable health impacts.

To support extreme heat readiness, the Environmental Public Health Science (EPHS) Unit has developed an Extreme Heat Toolkit and an Extreme Heat Action Planning Guide. Learn more and access resources on the Government of Alberta’s Extreme Heat webpage: https://www.alberta.ca/extreme-heat

The Alberta Environmental Public Health Information Network (AEPHIN) has been updated to include heat events through 2025, helping Albertans explore how their communities have experienced extreme heat over time and supporting local awareness, preparedness, and planning. In addition, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has updated how heat-related weather alerts are communicated. Heat Warnings will now use colour-coded impact levels to help better understand the severity of an extreme heat event. Learn more about ECCC weather alerts and warning colours here: https://www.canada.ca/en/services/environment/weather/severeweather/weather-alerts/colour-coded-alerts.html

To stay informed, monitor current alerts and forecasts through the Public Weather Alerts website or the WeatherCAN app, which provide real-time updates and alerts.
