CUPE Local 417 (CUPE 417) supports and unites more than 1,400 public sector workers across central Alberta, working to build a fairer future for everyone.

Together, we are undivided. Together, we are unstoppable. For more than 60 years, CUPE 417 has been the voice of workers in central Alberta. We are made up of civil servants, educational assistants, librarians, healthcare professionals, and more. We are the hard-working everyday people who make our communities run, day in, day out. And we believe we deserve a fair deal for doing so. As one united

body, we are committed to ensuring our rights are respected, to securing better working conditions, and to building a truly equitable future for everybody. Our collective strength provides us a powerful democratic platform which we use for the greater good. And, as a local affiliate of the national Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), we stand alongside more than 750,000 like-minded workers across Canada. Through it all, we are driven by the passion and commitment of our members. Being part of CUPE 417 is more than paying dues. It's being part of a community. When bad weather takes us by storm you can always count on those of us who brave the snowy weather. Our Union members on the local snow removal team make sure we get through the worst of winter. To those braving the cold to keep our roads safe, thank you!

This Remembrance day, we want to say thank you to all of the men and women who have fought for the freedoms that we have today. To those who never came home and those who were never the same, we will never forget your sacrifice.

On November 1 and 2, 2025 three elected delegates from CUPE 417 had the chance to attend an Education Employees Committee meeting hosted by CUPE Alberta.

This meeting was a chance for education support workers represented by CUPE to come together to discuss common concerns throughout the province's education system, as well as learn from each other best practices in workplaces.

Our members left the meeting feeling excited about the work being done across the province and empowered to continue supporting children through their education journey.

Yesterday's actions by the Alberta government are deeply concerning for us and all workers across the province and the country. While we are still deciding on the best way to show our support, rest assured that we will show it in every action, word, and decision from this point on. We earned our rights together and we are now ready to defend them together, too.

We stand with Alberta's teachers!

On Friday, CUPE 417 joined the ATA rally in Red Deer to show our support for teachers and their advocacy for quality public education. Our education support workers stand shoulder to shoulder with teachers, because when we all stand together, our students win.

Many of us are looking forward to enjoying a turkey dinner with the family this Thanksgiving. But some in our community are struggling to fill their cupboards.

The weather’s turning, but our members are already one step ahead.
From city crews to school staff, we use October to lay the groundwork needed to keep Red Deer safe, warm, and moving this winter.
A little preparation saves a lot of hassle. But for us, it’s all part of the job ❄️
