Congratulations to Rover Mathew Hummel who achieved his Duke of Edinburgh Award - Gold Standard!! 🏅🎉
He persisted for 10 years to get this done. He had 90% of the award complete about 5 years ago, but it just took a while for the "stars to align" so he could complete his final requirement—the qualifying expedition. He had the opportunity to complete his last requirement with our Montreal exchange friends when he accompanied them on a 5-day, 70 km hike. They were happy to have him along as their mountain guide since it was their first time hiking in our rugged terrain.
Operating in over 130 countries, The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is globally recognized as the world’s premier youth achievement challenge. It demands immense self-discipline, resilience, and a long-term commitment to community service, fitness, and skills. Because of its rigorous standards, the "club" of Gold Achievers is incredibly elite—less than 1% of eligible Canadian youth complete this prestigious level annually. Mathew is only the 3rd Scout to earn the Gold Standard in the 50-year history of Red Deer 18th Scout Group.
Mathew, your dedication to finishing what you started is inspiring, and your leadership on the trail proves you are exactly the kind of trailblazer this award recognizes. With his official certificate now in hand, we look forward to celebrating him further as he awaits his formal vice-regal presentation ceremony! We are incredibly proud of you! 🏔️✨
