On our last two days of our exchange with the Pionniers 229 we traveled back toward Red Deer. We stopped to have a guided tour of the Nordegg coal mine. Then we stopped at the historical Taunton trestle bridge at Saunders, and stayed at Camp Sherbino near Sylvan Lake. We were treated to a delicious spaghetti meal prepared by Scouting Mom's Tara and Tanis, and celebrated Boris's birthday. The next day we officially closed the Red Deer part of the exchange and said our goodbyes. In just a few days we will be in Montreal to experience the fun and hospitality of the Pionniers! Welcome to Day 5 of our exchange with the Pionniers 229 of Montreal! Today we hiked into the backcountry for a one night camp at one of our favourite sites. There was a fire ban but that didn't stop us from having a fun with traditional Scouting songs, skits and cheers. Canada Sports Friendship Exchange Programs

Day 4 of our exchange with the Pionniers 229 from Montreal started with a healthy egg breakfast. We did a day hike to Allstones Ridge and Lake. The weather was very nice so most of the Scouts took a dip in the lake. After the hike we made "Kuzzies" to help rehydrate our trail suppers for our backpacking trip on day 5. On Day three of hosting our Pionniers 229 friends from Montreal we drove from Banff all the way to the Kootenay Plains campground on highway 11. We made a stop at Peyto Lake /Glacier viewpoint and Parker Ridge. At the top of Parker Ridge we held a special investiture ceremony for our new Venturer Youth and Scouters. We also invested our exchange group of 31 Scouts and became "one" with a blue, white and gold neckerchief with both of our provincial symbols on it. Canada Sports Friendship Exchange Programs

The Alberta hosting portion of our exchange program is complete and what a fantastic time we had with our new friends; the Pionniers 229! We knew from the first few planning emails last Christmas that we would be a great match. Here is the first set of pictures from the first 2 days of our 7 days together. After collecting them at YYC we headed straight to Banff, staying at Two Jack Lake campground. Day 2 had us climbing the Ridge walker Tour on the Mount Norquay Via Ferrata and then a fast tour of the town of Banff. Canada Sports Friendship Exchange Programs

We are only one month away from our Scouting exchange program with our Scouting friends from Montreal - Pionniers 229! For our week hosting them we will be in Banff National Park for a few days. The highlight will be climbing the Mount Norquay Via Ferrata. Then, we spend a few days in the David Thompson Corridor area hiking and doing an overnight backpacking trip. It will also be a really sweet adventure for our Scouts who have not been to many of these places! Here's a few pictures to whet some appetites. Later in August we travel to Montreal for a fun filled week in the city and at their nearby camp.

Congratulations to Rover Marek and Venturer Rocky on being awarded Scouts Canada’s Medal of the Maple. It was fitting to present this to them at our annual Kub Kar, Beaver Buggy, and Scout Truck rally where they were volunteering.

The Medal of the Maple is a prestigious Scouts Canada award launched in 2007 by the National Youth Network to recognize youth who exhibit distinguished service, leadership, and a solid commitment to Scouting values. It honors members who go above and beyond in community service and Scouting participation, often referred to as a "Distinguished Youth Service" award.

This August we are hosting 15 Scouts from Montreal as part of an exchange program. Our fundraising efforts got a wonderful boost from the kind folks at the Reer Deer Optimist Club. We really appreciate their donation to help our Scouts and the Montreal Scouts enjoy a week full of adventure in the mountains together.

Our scout group and the Red Deer Optimists have a long shared history as they used to be our sponsor many years ago. The optimists also knew the late and great Scouter Mike Corpe who was a 20+ year leader with us and was still around when Scouter Bruce joined.
