🎉Afro-Caribbean Festival🎉

We are seeking performers, market vendors, sponsors, and volunteers to join us for our festival! We want to celebrate the diverse community of Central Alberta. Our festival is not only a celebration of African and Caribbean cultures, it is a celebration of our community's cultures, newcomers, and people.

Our goal is to connect and strengthen the bonds among the people of Central Alberta by inviting everyone to celebrate their individual cultures. On Saturday, we invite you to bring your country’s flag for the flag ceremony! We want to combat isolation and encourage you to connect your cultural identity with our amazing community.

On Sunday, please wear your cultural attire. We will play music from your culture so we can all celebrate each other’s heritage together.🌎❤️

This Saturday, from 1:30pm to 3:30pm, we invite you to join us at Zainab's Coffee House, Little Geatz, to pay tribute to Jan Underwood, a dear friend whose influence on my life has been profound since 2010. Refreshments, including free coffee, samosas, and African donuts, will be served. Jan's unwavering commitment to our community through her roles at Care for Newcomers and numerous charitable endeavors has been remarkable. For those unable to attend on Saturday, a secondary gathering is scheduled at Conquest House, Power Ponds, from 3 to 6pm. ACCoCA invites university students to register for the 3 days Black Youth Leadership and Public Engagement Program. The program aims to empower the youth with practical leadership skills that will enable take responsibility for the development of their Community.
The program focuses on leadership workshops, panel discussions and Guest speakers to highlight the comprehensive approach to developing leadership skills. Workshops will provide a hands-on learning experience, allowing participants to enhance their leadership abilities through practical exercises and interactive sessions. The panel discussion will offer a platform for exchanging ideas, perspectives, and experiences, fostering a deeper understanding of leadership in various contexts. Having guest speakers share their insights and leadership stories will inspire and provide valuable guidance to the participants.

NB: Attestations of Participation will be delivered to Participants.

Tremendous thanks to Red Deer Polytechnic for featuring my story as part of Black History Month. RDP is the biggest instrumental to my success and taught me it is possible to reach a glass ceiling if you work hard in your studies and have compassion for others.

Meet Zainab Mohamoud, a proud Red Deer Polytechnic Alumni of the Social Work Diploma, Class of 2013.

"I am passionate about a world where everyone is treated with respect, dignity, fairness, safeguard, harmony, and peace. I want to share my story as a proud Black Canadian who works hard every day so that I can help others and represent my community. Showcase my best in a positive mirror so that many young people can follow in my footsteps to elevate themselves and their communities. I am a proud board member of Sunrise Rotary Club as a Community Service Chair to give back to the community of Red Deer and volunteer for many local and international charitable organizations to make the world a better place for everyone.

I am the founder and president of the Education for Somali Girls and Boys Foundation (EFSGBF), which built a school in Somalia in 2015. Since 2015, hundred volunteers and I have raised money to pay the teacher's salaries so that the children go to school without fees because they cannot afford to pay fees for schools.

I am the founder and executive director of the African Caribbean Centre of Central Alberta (ACCOCA). We are organizing our first Afro-Caribbean Festival in Red Deer to bring 3,000 attendees from across Alberta. My vision for ACCOCA is strengthening black people's quality of life in Central Alberta and exchanging knowledge and culture."

Zainab has earned numerous awards for her work with governments, NGOs, community organizations, schools and other organizations. Her work demonstrates the interconnectedness of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. While her work makes a direct impact on Goal 4: Quality Education and Goal 5: Gender Equality, she is also contributing to work that is building Sustainable Cities and Communities (Goal 11), Ending Poverty (Goal 1), Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (Goal 16) and Partnerships for the Goals (Goal 17).

Education for Somali Girls and Boys Foundation and our board of directors invite you to join us this month to celebrate Black History Month. We will be featuring Black Excellence by interviewing local individuals throughout February. We postponed our fundraising effort this year due to the ongoing COVID 19 Pandemic. However, we are still accepting donations to pay our teachers from Aug 2022 to May 2023. We have a sponsorship for a child's education and an allowance of $35.00 a month or $350.00 for the school year. Please visit our website to contribute whatever you can afford. www.efsgbf.org
