🍂 Fall brings plenty of opportunities to get outside and enjoy the changing season. It also includes activities where a pocket first aid kit can come in handy.

Some common fall-activity injuries include sprains or strains from hiking on uneven ground, cuts and scrapes from cycling falls, minor cuts and splinters from yard work, and sprains, strains, or concussions from fall sports.

A pocket first aid kit is an easy option to keep in your bag, car, or with your outdoor gear, so you have some essentials close by when you need them.

What exactly does a Medical First Responder do?

St. John Ambulance Medical First Responders are trained volunteers who provide first aid and medical care at community events and are often among the first people on scene when an emergency happens. They’re there to help someone who is injured or unwell, provide care, and reduce the risk of further injury or illness while they wait for additional medical assistance.

But being an MFR is about more than responding to emergencies. It’s an opportunity to build advanced first aid and healthcare experience, develop skills that can benefit you in your career and everyday life, meet people who share your interest in helping others, and become more involved in your community. St. John Ambulance provides the training you need to get started.

If you’re looking for a hands-on way to give back, learn new skills, and make a difference when your community needs you, consider becoming an MFR with St. John Ambulance.

❤️ We’re incredibly proud of Ziggy and Barb, our amazing St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog team!

They recently took part in a University of Alberta research study exploring the benefits of therapy dog visits for individuals living with dementia. The study compares interactions with a therapy dog versus a person, helping researchers better understand the impact these visits can have.

Anyone who has seen a therapy dog in action knows the comfort, connection, and joy they bring. This research will help turn those positive experiences into valuable data that may shape future dementia care.

A huge thank-you to Barb for her dedication and to Ziggy for being the gentle, loving therapy dog he is. Together, they’re making a real difference, not only through their visits but also by contributing to research that could benefit others for years to come.

Interested in making a difference in your community? Become a St. John Ambulance volunteer or Therapy Dog team member! Send us a message to learn more about how you can get involved.

We're so proud of you both! 🐾❤️

When was the last time you checked your first aid certificate?

It’s easy to lose track of when your training expires, especially when months or even years have passed since you took your course. But having current training means your skills and knowledge are ready when you need them.

Take a minute to check your certificate expiry date. If it’s coming up, don’t wait until the last minute to refresh your training. It’s a chance to revisit important skills, build your confidence, and make sure you’re ready to respond when someone needs help.
Keep your skills current, keep learning, and keep helping.

This International Day of Charity, we're reflecting on what it means to support our communities.

At St. John Ambulance, our work is centered on one goal: helping enhance the health and well-being of people across Canada.

Every day, people choose to support that work by learning new skills, volunteering their time, purchasing first-aid products, and making donations. Together, these contributions help us continue to provide training, products, and community-based services to the people who need them.

If you believe in safer, healthier communities, consider supporting our work with a donation today, https://sja.ca/en/donate?srsltid=AfmBOopUSK78ZYwRT5C7A8ntm3OcleZTniERb2_iA7RcL4H_q3XgzBa7
