Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) continues to advance Alberta’s leadership in energy innovation following a $1,245,000 announcement today from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan).

This federal applied research grant will support the creation of a 125kW agrivoltaics demonstration unit.

RDP’s Energy Innovation Centre will explore the dual use of land and solar photovoltaic technology for active crop cultivation to maximize land efficiency and act as a balance between energy generation and food production. Located on the south part of RDP’s main campus, the outdoor site will feature bi-facial solar panels and advanced tracking systems designed to optimize energy generation while maintaining agricultural productivity, even in cold climates!

Quick Facts:

✔ In 5 years, RDP aims to train 1,000 individuals—including RDP students, industry partners and community members—through hands-on learning opportunities, field trips and the development of a new micro-credential in agrivoltaics.

✔Through open-source, real-time data collection with RDP’s Data Sharing Alliance (DSA) platform, sensors will analyze energy production, soil moisture, and crop health. This information will provide farmers and policymakers with actionable insights.

✔ Nextpower will provide their NX Horizon smart solar tracker.

✔ CBI Solar will supply a high-quality solar component to make this dual-use system a reality.

✔ Sunchild and Montana First Nations will participate as collaborators to help support the energy independence and food autonomy for rural and Indigenous populations.

Officials with Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) say the institution is positioning itself as a catalyst for innovation, productivity and a driver of economic growth.

On Feb. 25, on RDP’s main campus, the Energy Innovation Fair showcased how the institution and its partners are shaping the province’s energy future through expert insights and meaningful conversations.

“When we bring industry, researchers and communities together, we accelerate the pace at which ideas become real‑world solutions,” said Dr. Tonya Wolfe, Associate Vice President, Applied Research, Red Deer Polytechnic. “Events like this demonstrate how collaboration drives Alberta’s energy future forward.”

Organizers say the fair highlighted Alberta’s unique position at the epicentre of energy development. Long known as a resource powerhouse, RDP says the province has emerged as a hub of technological advancement.

Designed to build on that momentum, officials note the event connected industry leaders, entrepreneurs, municipalities, researchers, businesses and engaged citizens. This convergence of perspectives is described as essential for developing, commercializing and adopting creative energy solutions that will strengthen Alberta’s competitive edge.

RDP says it demonstrated strong leadership throughout the program, driven by its commitment to innovation and industry collaboration.

Through the Centre for Innovation in Manufacturing-Technology Access Centre (CIM-TAC) and the Energy Innovation Centre, officials say the institution advances applied research, accelerates technology development and empowers companies to scale their ideas into market-ready solutions.

According to organizers, the fair also underscored the importance of leveraging Alberta’s deep expertise in oil and gas while expanding into new frontiers such as carbon capture and utilization, renewable energy, circular‑economy solutions and digital technologies.

This dual focus, honouring the province’s strengths while embracing diversification, is central to long‑term economic resilience, say institution officials. RDP says it plays a pivotal role in this transition by educating and training the workforce, supporting applied research partnerships and creating opportunities for students, faculty, staff and industry to collaborate on cutting‑edge projects.

Organizers say the event’s lineup reflected the breadth of Alberta’s energy innovation.

From Justin Riemer’s keynote on technologies driving economic and sustainability leadership to discussions on Indigenous energy perspectives, the fair is said to have offered a comprehensive look at the forces shaping Alberta’s future.

Officials share that the day concluded with the Green Gala Awards, celebrating individuals and organizations advancing sustainability and energy diversification, a testament to RDP’s commitment to recognizing and amplifying innovation.

Ultimately, the Energy Innovation Fair was acknowledged as more than a conference. It was described as a statement about Alberta’s role in energy innovation and RDP’s impact as a leader. By building connections, training workers and championing forward‑thinking solutions, Red Deer Polytechnic says it is helping ensure that Alberta does not simply adapt to the future of energy but helps define it.

Following the Energy Innovation Fair, Red Deer Polytechnic presented the 2026 Green Gala Awards to celebrate achievements in energy innovation across Alberta.

This year, the Polytechnic recognized the following recipients:

• Borren Builders as Entrepreneur of the Year – This Lacombe-based company prioritizes sustainability, durability and healthy indoor environments by thoughtfully selecting building materials and employing airtight construction methods.

• Vleeming Custom Homes as Small and Medium Enterprise of the Year – Carlo Vleeming, founder of Vleeming Custom Homes, leads the company’s push for sustainable construction. Their certified net‑zero home using ICE panels and solar technology reflects this focus. He promotes innovative methods and works to elevate industry standards for long‑term environmental and community benefit.

• Red Deer Food Bank as Community Organization of the Year – The Red Deer Food Bank is expanding food access through sustainable, locally focused growing initiatives. Using hydroponic and vertical systems, along with a solar‑assisted greenhouse, they produce fresh food year‑round with minimal resources. These projects strengthen community resilience and model environmentally responsible practices.

Released January 12, 2026

"Investing in our energy future is not just an opportunity for Canadian leadership - it is the greatest commercial opportunity of our time. As global markets and trade shift rapidly and the world moves toward diverse, lower-carbon sources of energy, Canada’s energy grid investments must keep pace to ensure energy security and affordability for Canadians and to secure the reliability we need to support a prosperous, growing economy - including during peak demand periods, like the winter months.

Today, Corey Hogan, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, announced nearly $3 million in funding through the Energy Innovation Program’s Smart Grids Regulatory Innovation Capacity Building Call for Proposals to support four Alberta projects that will enhance grid reliability and resiliency in the province. This funding includes:

1) $1.5 million to ENMAX to develop a roadmap for regulatory and technical changes and to explore innovative approaches to help modernize Alberta’s grid;

2) $532,770 to EPCOR Distribution & Transmission Inc. to study the feasibility of different advanced-rate structures and how they can help guide lower electricity costs;

3) $500,000 to the Transition Accelerator to enable the deployment of thermal energy networks - systems that use piping infrastructure to share heating and cooling between buildings - which can leverage multiple local clean heat sources while lowering costs to consumers and reducing peak electricity demand; and

4) $250,000 to the Alberta Energy Efficiency Alliance to support the development of a regulatory framework for demand-side management in Alberta to help consumers make better use of smart grid technology.

These projects will not only contribute to enhancing grid reliability during heavy load times like winter but also support Canada and Alberta’s long-term energy security and affordability and economic strength. By investing in our people, technologies and natural resources, we can strengthen our economy today, build resilience for the future and reinforce Canada’s position as an energy superpower."

Resources for fleet and vehicle owners

The way that goods and services are transported is quickly changing across the world. Pembina Institute just produced, "The Moving to Electric" resource designed to support small fleet owners in making the switch to electric vehicles.

"With the global shift in energy use, zero-emission vehicles - those that do not emit air polluting emissions - will become a vital component of the transportation industry. Customer demand is increasingly moving global corporations toward sustainable transportation services. Besides reducing greenhouse gas emissions, electric trucks and vans cost less to operate and offer improved efficiency and comfort.

Whether you are a fleet manager, a business owner, or simply someone interested in the future of transportation, this page can provide you with resources to help make informed decisions about using an electric truck or van in your business."
