Every week, something simple and powerful happens at ACCoCA.

Our Mosaic Cultural Market brings neighbours together around food, craft, conversation, and culture.

It is not a one-day event or a seasonal pop-up - it is a rhythm.
A weekly reminder that this community is here, that it is growing, and that there is always room for one more at the table.

What markets do that big events cannot: they build the slow, steady trust between neighbours that keeps a community healthy over time.

A vendor from West Africa shares a recipe with a lifelong Albertan.

A newcomer hears a familiar language in an unexpected place.

A child discovers food that their grandparent used to make.

These are small moments. They are also the foundation of everything.

Thousand attendees. Free entry. A downtown that came alive.

When our annual Afro-Caribbean Festival runs, it does not happen in isolation.

It happens on the streets of Red Deer.

Vendors sell out their products.

Restaurants report stronger-than-usual nights.

Parking lots turn over throughout the day.
Local businesses see customers they have never seen before.

Cultural events are economic engines.

They bring visitors into downtown corridors, generate spending across multiple sectors, and create a magnetic effect that benefits the entire city - not just the communities hosting them.

Since 2023, people came together in downtown Red Deer for our annual Afro-Caribbean Festival.

No ticket required. No cost to attend. Just culture, music, food, art, and connection - wide open and free to everyone.

Each day brings thousands of visitors into the heart of our city.

It fills the streets with energy, it puts customers at local vendors' tables, and it fills our community with a pride that lasts long after the last drum beat fades.

The Afro-Caribbean Festival is not just an event. It is a demonstration of what Red Deer can be: a place where every culture has a stage, and where every person has a seat.

Moving to a new country takes everything you have.

And when you arrive, the questions come fast. How do I find work here? Where do I go for help? Who can I trust with something this important?

At ACCoCA, we built our newcomer programs around exactly those questions.

We offer employment assistance and coaching to help people find their footing in the workforce.

We run early intervention programs for families who are just beginning their journey in Central Alberta.

We provide peer support from people who have walked the same path.

And we connect newcomers to legal and financial guidance so they can advocate for themselves and the people they love.

Integration is not just about paperwork. It is about belonging. It is about someone handing you a map and saying: we are here with you.

We are so excited to share this with our community — we are offering a Free Basic English Literacy Program starting January 4, 2027!

This 20-week Community Adult Learning Program is designed for adults with little or no basic English skills. Whether you are a newcomer finding your footing in Red Deer or an adult looking to build confidence in reading and writing, this program is for you. Together, we will work on everyday English skills in a welcoming, supportive space.

Classes run January 4 to May 31, 2027, with two options to fit your schedule:

Morning Classes: Monday and Wednesday, 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM
Evening Classes: Tuesday and Thursday, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Registration fee is just $20. We are also welcoming volunteers who would like to support learners outside of class time — your presence makes a difference.

Something shifts when people feel they truly belong somewhere.

They show up. They invest. They look out for their neighbours. They volunteer. They build.

That is what we see happening at ACCoCA - not because we planned it on a whiteboard, but because we created the conditions for it.

A festival where 10,000 people arrived as strangers and left as neighbours. A weekly market where a vendor from West Africa and a lifelong Albertan discover they share a love of good food.

A support program where a newcomer finds someone who speaks their language - literally and figuratively.

Belonging is not a soft goal. It is the foundation of everything else: economic participation, civic engagement, mental health, family stability. When people belong, communities grow.

We are building belonging in Central Alberta - one event, one conversation, one person at a time.

Real stories. Diverse perspectives. A chance to come together, learn, and connect through film and conversation.

There is a West African proverb: "The forest would be silent if no bird sang except the one that sang best."

Every newcomer who arrives in Central Alberta carries something - a profession, a skill, a story, a dream they have been building for years.

Our job is not to replace what they have brought. It is to help them plant it here.

Through employment coaching, early intervention programs, and hands-on integration support, we walk alongside newcomers as they navigate a new city, a new job market, and a new chapter of their lives.

We help people prepare for interviews, understand their rights, access financial guidance, and find a community that will not let them feel alone.

When newcomers thrive, Central Alberta thrives. Their contributions - economic, cultural, civic - belong to all of us.

In 2025, more than 10,000 people came through the gates of our annual Afro-Caribbean Festival. Every one of them entered for free.

That is not a small thing. It means families who could not otherwise afford a cultural experience got one.

It means Red Deer's downtown filled with music, food, colour, and life. It means thousands of visitors - many for the very first time - experienced the depth and joy of African and Caribbean culture right here in Central Alberta.

Our festival is also an economic event. When 10,000 people gather downtown, vendors do business, restaurants fill up, and the whole corridor comes alive.

Culture and commerce are not in competition. When people feel seen and celebrated, they invest in the communities that welcomed them.

We are proud to offer an event that belongs to everyone - no ticket required, just an open invitation.

We do not want to just survive. We want to grow.

In the past year alone, ACCoCA welcomed thousands of people to our flagship festival, ran our weekly Mosaic Cultural Market every single week, and supported hundreds of newcomers through employment coaching, peer support, and legal and financial guidance without full time staff and operation funds.

We have done all of it with a lean part time, volunteers who have deep commitment, and an unshakeable belief that this work matters.

But sustaining what we have built - and growing into what we know is possible - requires more than passion.

It requires operational investment. The kind that lets us plan ahead, pay our people fairly, and meet the need before it becomes a crisis.

There is a Swahili saying: "Haba na haba, hujaza kibaba" — little by little fills the measure. Every donation, every shared post, every person who says "I believe in this" is filling that measure.

We are asking you to be part of what comes next.
