RIFD responded to a suspicious fire at the Rankin Inlet landfill on Saturday evening just after 7:00 pm. 14 members fought this fire, with the support of the Hamlet Public Works crew loaders and water truck, until after midnight when the fire was extinguished. Crews left the scene, but were called back Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm when the fire reignited with a vengence. 40 truckloads of fill were brought in and spread as firefighters continued the fight until 9:30 pm. At that point they left the scene and allowed the fire to burn overnight.
Today we have another 100 truckloads of fill being spread out over the dump, in an attempt to smother the fire.
Thanks to the hardworking members of RIFD, along with the loader operators and water truck driver from the Hamlet.

After 9 years with RIFD, Captain Brittany Aggark stepped down from the fire service to pursue a full time career in health care with the Long Term Care Facility.

Brittany started with RIFD as a summer student while still in high school and at the end of the summer decided to stay on as a new recruit. Over the course of her firefighting career, she learned to push herself and truly expanded her comfort zone. She worked hard in training, completing Firefighter Level 1 and 2, Fire Officer 1, Fire Service Instructor, Fire and Life Safety Educator, and her EMR certification. She excelled in fire prevention, taking the lead with our school programs teaching young students about fire safety, and was a mentor to many of our recruit firefighters. She was a leader on the fire ground and in the ambulance.

From a shy summer student to a Fire Captain and leader, Brittany devoted a lot of time to our department and to the community of Rankin Inlet.

We will miss you Captain Aggark. Good luck in your role with the LTCF. Our loss is definitely their gain. We are all immensely proud of you and how far you have come.

Rankin Inlet Fire Department has started our Spring / Summer Recruit Drive. We are looking for 8-10 men and women to join our department as part time, paid-on call members.
RIFD is a busy volunteer (Paid-on-call) department. We respond to an average of 900+ calls a year, including emergency medical calls and medevac transports, structure fires, rescues, alarms, hazmat incidents, and any other calls for assistance.
Paid-on-call members are compensated for every hour that they spend responding to emergencies, attending training sessions, being on call for ambulance shifts and participating in other approved activities.
Members also can qualify for a $6,000 Volunteer Firefighter Tax Credit based on a minimum 200 volunteer (POC) hours.
No prior training or certifications are required to apply as RIFD will provide any necessary training in house and through the Nunavut Fire Marshal’s Office. A Class 5 driver’s license and current first aid certification would be assets but are not essential to the hiring process.
The biggest thing we are looking for is attitude. We want people with a good, positive attitude who are willing to learn, want to help the community and can work well as a member of our team. RIFD members come from all walks of life and range in age from 18 to 60s. If you think you can’t do this, you just might surprise yourself.
Paid-on-call members are not required to resign from their regular full-time jobs to join our team. The scheduled expectations of these positions are like that of a part time job.
Scheduled training sessions take place every Thursday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. We will also be running an in-depth recruit training program over 2 weekends later this spring.
Interviews and physical testing will take place during the first two weeks of May, and training will begin once the hiring process is complete.
Applications are available now and can be picked up at the firehall.

RIFD hosted our annual Emergency Services Christmas Party on Saturday night. We throw this party annually for the fire department, RCMP and ER nurses and doctors, who we are pleased to work with on an almost daily basis throughout the year. We also present our annual fire department awards at the event. This year’s award recipients include:
Most Dedicated Medic - Lt. Luke Webb
Most Dedicated Training - Lt. Luke Webb and Recruit FF Claudette Ymana
Firefighter of the Year - Corey King
Fire Officer of the Year - Lt. Jared Osborn
Fire Chief’s Award - Recruit FF Lucas Kolola Sammurtok

Congratulations to all of the award winners, and a huge thanks to all of the members at RIFD. We have just surpassed 800 calls for service in 2025 and the year is not over. That is a very busy department with 14 paid-on-call volunteers and 2 career chief officers.
I am immensely proud of each and every one of you!
Chief Wyatt
