My Grandfather.

Gédéon Pépin arrived in the Klondike in 1901, along with six other Quebecers, after a fifteen-day journey from Montreal to Dawson. After unsuccessfully trying his luck on Dominion Creek mining claim no. 19, his friend Albert Fortin told him that St. Mary's Church in Dawson was looking for an organist to play their new Casavant organ.

He served as organist at St. Mary's Church until 1912. During this time, he played in music halls and accompanied silent films at the cinema during the week. Gédéon also founded the town's first brass band and contributed to concerts at the renowned Dawson Opera House, now the Palace Grand Theatre.

An unknown composer

Gédéon composed numerous pieces during his time in Dawson, some of which he performed to accompany public readings by the poet Robert Service. His most renowned work is undoubtedly Arctic Brotherhood, a ragtime for piano composed in honor of the Arctic Brotherhood charity, which counted King Edward VII and Theodore Roosevelt among its 10,000 members.
