Series on active winter animals: mallard (Anas platyrhynchos)

Who said winter slows everything down? The mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) keeps patrolling our urban waterways like a true city regular. A reminder that wildlife is much closer than we think.

A century of life devoted to Earth.

Born on 8 May 1926 in England, Sir David Attenborough is 99 years old in February 2026 and will celebrate his 100th birthday in May 2026. For more than 70 years, his voice has guided millions through rainforests, oceans, deserts, and frozen wilderness. Few people on the planet have shaped our understanding of nature the way he has.

His career began at the BBC in the 1950s, long before wildlife filmmaking became cinematic. From groundbreaking series like Life on Earth to global phenomena such as Planet Earth and Blue Planet, he transformed nature documentaries into emotional, scientific storytelling that reached every generation. His calm narration became instantly recognizable, almost synonymous with the natural world itself.

But his impact goes beyond television. In recent decades, Attenborough has become one of the strongest voices warning about climate change, biodiversity loss, and habitat destruction. He has used his platform not just to showcase beauty, but to urge protection.

Series on active winter animals
What are the animals that are still active and visible during the winter in a urban city of Quebec? First, I would say the most visible one is probably the eastern grey squirrel (Sciurus caroliniensis). These furry balls are really well adapted even to the coldest winters. In Costa Rica where I would prefer to be during the winter, the equivalent animal is the variegated squirrel (Sciurus variegatoides rigidus) much more colorfull.
