Over the past two days, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami hosted Nilliajut: Asserting Inuit rights in Arctic security, an invitation-only policy conference in Ottawa. Day 1 was an intimate session for Inuit and Day two featured a broader audience and array of speakers. Our goal was to develop a unified position in response to the rapid changes in our homeland. As all eyes focus in on Inuit Nunangat, we are seizing the opportunity with unity, strength and a commitment to creating prosperity and equity for our people.

Revisit some of the research findings and projects shared during the meeting. The ASM2025 had a full program with 78 sessions, 292 oral presentations and 251 posters, bringing together nearly 1,400 members of the Canadian and international Arctic community for a week of discussion, networking, and knowledge sharing!

Our Vice-President Research, Christine Barnard, PhD, was pleased to participate this week in a panel on “Science Diplomacy in a Challenging Arctic landscape”, alongside Katherine Alivaktuk (Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami), David Hik (Polar Knowledge Canada), Pooneh Maghoul (Polytechnique Montréal), and Ranjana Sharma (Natural Resources Canada). The discussion was moderated by Mario Rivero-Huguet (British Consulate General, Montreal).

The discussion highlighted the Arctic's unique role as a region where science intersects directly with foreign policy, environmental stewardship, Indigenous rights, economic development, and international cooperation.

As Canada considers the development of a national science diplomacy strategy, the Arctic should be recognized not simply as another research domain, but as a strategic priority and a proving ground for science diplomacy.

The panel took place as part of the summit, Canadian Strategy to Harness the Power of Science Diplomacy, organized by the Université de Montréal, the University of Calgary, and McGill University, in collaboration with the GESDA - Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator and the Embassy of Switzerland in Canada / Ambassade de Suisse au Canada.

Notre vice-présidente à la recherche, Christine Barnard, a eu le plaisir de participer cette semaine à un panel sur la diplomatie scientifique dans un contexte arctique en mutation, aux côtés de Katherine Alivaktuk (Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami), David Hik (Polar Knowledge Canada (POLAR) / Savoir polaire Canada (POLAIRE), Pooneh Maghoul (Polytechnique Montréal) et Ranjana Sharma (Ressources naturelles Canada (RNCan), sous la modération de Mario Rivero-Huguet (Consulat général de la Grande-Bretagne à Montréal).

Les discussions ont mis en lumière le rôle unique de l'Arctique, où la science croise directement les enjeux de politique étrangère, de gestion de l'environnement, de droits des peuples autochtones, de développement économique et de coopération internationale.

À mesure que le Canada réfléchit à une stratégie nationale de diplomatie scientifique, l'Arctique doit être considéré non seulement comme un domaine de recherche, mais comme une priorité stratégique et un véritable terrain d'expérimentation pour la diplomatie scientifique.

Cette discussion s'est tenue dans le cadre du sommet "Une stratégie canadienne pour catalyser la puissance de la diplomatie scientifique", organisé par l'Université de Montréal, l'Université de Calgary et l'Université McGill, en collaboration avec le GESDA - Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator et l'Ambassade de Suisse au Canada.

We encourage eligible participants to explore this opportunity and apply before the July 20, 2026 deadline!

Cette semaine, l'équipe d'ArcticNet s'est retrouvée à l'occasion de sa retraite annuelle pour échanger, réfléchir ensemble à l'année qui s'en vient et, surtout, profiter du plaisir d'être réunis.

Même si notre équipe travaille chaque jour dans des domaines différents, ces moments nous rappellent que nous poursuivons tous le même objectif.
