St. Andrews Lodge Historical and Cultural Society

St. Andrews Lodge Historical and Cultural Society SALHACS has been founded to preserve and restore an 88 year-old heritage building on the waterfront in Qualicum Beach, Vancouver Island.

The Lodge became one of the cornerstones of the tourism industry in the area when it opened in 1938 The society is also intent on preserving the history of the lodge and the legacy of the Little family, who built and operated the lodge and cottages

There can be little doubt that Sam Little, designer and owner of St. Andrews Lodge, was a man ahead of his time. He was a very busy architect in Qualicum Beach, designing homes and public buildings that helped establish the character of the Town. The proof is in the pudding, as the saying goes - these are photos of one of the newly-restored Lodge rooms. Simple comforts were enhanced by ensuites in every room, complete with showers - an unheard-of luxury in middle-class hostelries in the 1930s. This bedroom has been staged as a salute to Sam’s foresight and creativity and will be included in the Lodge tours during the grand re-opening celebrations on July 4. Many thanks to John at The Foam Guy, Parksville for donating the foam mattress for the vintage bed, and to volunteer Bev Smith for creating the beautiful quilt made from linens salvaged from the Glen cottages.

What an amazing, busy day at the Lodge! While the Anu Enterprises crew worked at cleaning all the debris off the roof SALHACS volunteers got to work on a couple of projects in preparation for the big day on July 4. The beginnings of the new storage ‘cottage’ at the back of the Lodge got under way and inside the Lodge all of the curtain rods (some original, some new) got re-installed in preparation for the hanging of new curtains and drapes. Just over two weeks left now to get everything pulled back together for the Grand Re-opening celebration - so exciting! Many thanks to volunteers Bob, Keith and Adam (the storage shed crew) and Robert, Bev, Jay and Michael for the work inside the Lodge.

More progress at the Lodge this week - back garden area cleaned up, and the photographs and memories board in the office has been populated with pictures dating all the way back to the 1950s. If you have any photos from time spent at the Lodge and cottages, we would love to include them on the board.
