Tribute to Board Member Herman Glemser
We regret to announce that Board member Herman Glemser passed away on June 2 at the age of 77.
Born in Germany and married to a Dane, Herman served on the Board for nine years in the roles of Treasurer and Membership Director. His attention to detail in both positions was unmatched. He approached decisions with logic and loved statistics, often comparing years in percentages. Herman attended every Board meeting and was often a voice of reason.
He would sometimes say that the Board had “gone down the road to Abilene” — meaning the group (including himself) ended up doing something nobody really wants because each person assumes everyone else does. He understood human nature and group dynamics well. And when someone’s thinking didn’t make sense to him, he would often say, “Sometimes you just gotta shake your head.”
When solving finance or membership issues, Herman searched for what he called "the breadcrumbs” — the small clues that revealed who paid what, when or where. He approached it like detective work and had a remarkable talent for piecing things together.
Outside the Board, Herman was an avid cyclist. Even after lung cancer slowed him down, he jokingly described riding 100 km over 24 hours as his “seniors metric” (he would split the ride over 2 half days), noting he used to routinely complete that distance in a single ride.
Because he never smoked and took good care of himself, he felt robbed of precious years he hoped to spend travelling. He carefully tracked every country he visited with the goal of seeing the world, and also worked his way through a list of Ontario’s top 100 sights.
Herman was always ready with a joke, especially when there was an opportunity for wordplay. For example, he humorously referred to my husband as “Triple MD” - because he is “Married to a Dane”, a “Medical Doctor” and is a “Michael David”.
All of these Hermanisms are what made him not only a great Board member but a wonderful friend. He will be greatly missed at Sunset Villa — or as he liked to pronounce it, “Sunset Veela". We thank him for his many years of dedicated service. Our thoughts are with his wife Alice, his children and grandchildren, all of whom he was immensely proud of and loved very much.
Herman will be interred at Sunset Mindepark.
