The government has introduced legislation that would effectively remove the right to strike for Canada’s longshore workers. The proposed changes to Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code would make it impossible for our members to exercise their constitutional right to withhold labour through a lawful strike. The bill would grant the minister the authority to order workers back to work by ‘forming an opinion’ that a stoppage affects ‘the national interest’. The first factor the bill lists is significant impact on the Canadian economy. Every port dispute in this country affects the economy; as such, writing this test into law effectively legislates away ILWU members’ right to strike.

Bill C-39 would also infringe on longshore workers' freedom of association by letting employers ask the Canada Industrial Relations Board to redraw bargaining units established by our members. Today only a union can make that application, and it should stay that way.

Our members move more than $500 billion in goods through Canada’s West Coast ports every year. Labour stability rests on agreements reached at the table, and the constitutionally protected right to strike is what gives both parties a reason to reach a deal. This legislation amounts to an attack on our members fundamental rights.

Come out to 380 Kaien Road accross from SGS Minerals for a hot dog and a conversation about SGS bargaining, wages and affordability.

Some managers might mistakenly think we have set up a picket line. They are so quick to rush to judgement!

The dogs are free but if you would like we are accepting donations for the food bank. We start serving at noon!
