A mug like the one your grandma had.
A jacket that’s already seen a few good winters… and still has more in it.

That’s the kind of recycling we see every single day.

On Global Recycling Day, people think about blue bins and sorting paper.
But here at the Prince George Hospice Thrift Store… we see something a little different.

We see reuse in action.

Donations coming through our doors that still have life left in them.
Volunteers carefully sorting, pricing, and putting items back out into the community.
Neighbours finding something they need — or didn’t know they needed — and giving it a second chance.

That’s not just recycling. That’s community.

Ever find something at the thrift store and think…

“I know this is useful… but what is it?” 🧵

We came across these little metal tools and they definitely belong in a sewing basket… but not everyone recognizes them right away.

So let’s see how many sewing experts we have out there.

Today is National Pi Day (3.14)… which got us thinking about another kind of “pie.”

The kind that cools on the windowsill.

The kind that fills the whole kitchen with the smell of apples, cinnamon, or blueberries picked in the summer and saved for winter.

For generations, pie plates were a staple in Canadian kitchens. Glass, tin, or ceramic — every home seemed to have one tucked away in the cupboard, ready for Sunday dinner, holidays, or a neighbour dropping by.

And here’s a little thrifter’s tip while we’re on the subject.

If you’re hunting for vintage pie plates, flip them over and check the bottom. Brands like Pyrex, Fire-King, and Anchor Hocking often stamped their maker’s marks right into the glass. Those little markings can tell you exactly when and where the piece was made.

You never know what kitchen treasures might be waiting on our shelves.

Ever flipped over a piece of jewellery at the thrift store and spotted a tiny little stamp that says 92.5?

That small number can make a thrifter’s heart do a little happy dance. 💃

92.5 means the piece is sterling silver. Silver that pure would normally be too soft to hold its shape, so jewellers mix it with a small amount of other metal for strength. The result is sterling silver, which is made of 92.5% real silver and 7.5% other metals.

That tiny mark is one of the easiest treasure-hunting clues in the thrift world.

What to look for while thrifting
Turn rings, bracelets, necklaces, and even some small spoons or trays over and look for tiny stamps like:

• 925
• 92.5
• Sterling
• Sterling Silver

They’re often tucked inside ring bands, on bracelet clasps, or on the back of pendants. If you spot one, there’s a good chance you’ve found real silver hiding in plain sight. 👀

And that’s one of the best parts of thrifting. A little curiosity, a quick flip of an item, and suddenly you might be holding a genuine treasure.

Today is National Barbie Day 🎀

Barbie first appeared on March 9, 1959, and since then she has had more than 200 careers — astronaut 🚀, doctor 🩺, pilot ✈️, engineer ⚙️ and just about everything in between.

And believe it or not, vintage Barbies still turn up in thrift stores.

Collectors often keep an eye out for early dolls, original outfits, and those tiny accessories that were so easy to lose back in the day. Even a single vintage dress or pair of shoes can be a fun find.

Here’s a little thrifter’s trick if you ever spot one:

Look at the feet.

Many of the earliest Barbies from the 1960s had holes in the bottom of their feet so the little high heels could stay on. If you see those tiny holes, you might be looking at an older doll.

Another clue is the stamp on the back. Many vintage dolls say “Made in Japan,” which collectors often get excited about.

So next time you’re browsing the toy shelf, take a closer look. That pink box or tiny shoe might be more interesting than it first appears.

Some people can spot a Levi’s tag from halfway across the clothing rack.
Others flip plates and teacups looking for Royal Doulton on the bottom.
Some folks always check the toy shelf for LEGO pieces.
Others keep an eye out for Pyrex, CorningWare, or those solid cast iron pans that seem to last forever.

And then there are the true treasure hunters… the ones who quietly turn things over to check for a maker’s mark before anyone else notices it.
