When Brenda first moved into Kindred Spirit with her newborn son, staff knew that the journey ahead would take courage, commitment, and consistency. Within her first month, however, staff began to see meaningful changes.

Brenda has remained sober from drugs and alcohol and has shown a strong commitment to creating a healthier life for herself and her children. She is actively caring for her infant son, consistently meeting his daily needs such as feeding, changing, soothing, and maintaining his sleep routine. Staff have observed her growing confidence in responding to his cues and ensuring he is safe, comfortable, and well cared for. She continues to maintain visits with her daughter, making both of her children a clear source of motivation in her recovery.

Brenda has also demonstrated responsibility in maintaining her living space. She keeps her apartment tidy and organized, ensuring it is a clean and safe environment for her son. She is attentive to household routines, regularly cleaning, doing laundry, and keeping baby supplies well-arranged and accessible. Staff have noted that she takes pride in her space and is becoming increasingly consistent in maintaining structure within her home.

She regularly participates in in-house programming, attends NA meetings, and engages in CFS programming. Through these supports, she is learning new skills, building healthy routines, and working toward a more stable future. Brenda uses staff assistance appropriately and is open to asking for help when needed, demonstrating insight and a willingness to accept support. She has also shown excitement and enthusiasm in participating in outings such as beach days, a zoo trip, and a camping trip, demonstrating her growing engagement and willingness to connect with positive experiences.

Although her journey is still ongoing, the progress Brenda has made in just a short time is encouraging. Staff have seen her dedication, resilience, and willingness to make positive changes. Her continued commitment to sobriety, parenting, programming, and maintaining a safe and organized home environment demonstrates that she is taking important steps toward building a healthier and more fulfilling life for herself and her children.

Today we have TWO testimonials from Gateway House youth clients!

✨ Testimonial #1 ✨
"I came to Gateway House after I completed treatment. I am trying to manage myself but am finding it very hard not to go back to my old ways.

With the help from staff and support from my worker I am hoping that I will be able to get myself better. I like living at Gateway as we feel like one big family and the food is real good. I came to YWCA Central a little over a week ago due to my mother took in a family that lost their home."

✨ Testimonial #2 ✨
"I have been with Wendy* since I was ten years old. I am now going to be going out on my own as I turn eighteen this year. I know I have a lot of problems and am happy that I had Wendy and the Y to help me get through some of them.

The best part of living at Gateway House is the support from staff and the food."

Why is Women's Economic Participation Still Unequal?

80% of women ages 25-54 were employed in Canada in 2025. Compare that to 86% of men in the same age group, and participation looks similar.

If you look at it from this perspective, it would seem women participate equally, right? Well, not quite. Let’s look a bit closer at what happens outside of employment rates.

✨ The Gender Pay Gap
Yes, there’s still a wage disparity between men and women in similar positions. In Canada, women are making just 87 cents for every dollar a man makes.

In Canada, women make up just:
36% of managers
5% of CEOs

On top of that, they still get paid less than men in those roles.

✨ Why?
Unpaid labour is a huge part of the reason why. Women spend an average of 12 hours per week caring for children or adults, while also looking after a disproportionate amount of household cleaning and management duties.

This means that women end up with less time and energy for career advancement.

Perceptions of women and their reliability are also part of the problem. Women can be stereotyped as less reliable because of the potential for additional unpaid labour outside of employment and be passed over for new opportunities, despite being qualified.

✨ What can we do about it?
👉 Support women-led and owned businesses
👉 Balance household duties more evenly
👉 Make a conscious effort to challenge biases and unfair practices

Increased access to quality, affordable child, elder, and disability care would reduce unpaid labour, stress, and fatigue.

✨ Everyone Wins
If women were able to participate in the economy at the same level as men, Canada’s GDP could rise by $150 billion. There are gains to be made through inclusion, we just have to decide to make some changes.

We've had lots of people asking about when our new affordable housing build would be ready, and we're happy to report that things are continuing on schedule. The first residents should be moving in at the beginning of January 2027!

There is finishing work, exterior cladding, and landscaping still to go, but we're excited with how things are looking and hope you are too! Thank you to Dan for giving us the update! Miller Contracting Ltd.
