Meal train update!
The qCEH nightly meal train has reached its finish line… mission accomplished!
We set out with a clear goal (with an unknown timeline): to make sure people were fed after the shelter closed in March, 2025 and to keep showing up until something new was in place. Thanks to all who supported, we did exactly that. The new Driftwood Shelter opened yesterday, which serves breakfast and dinner meals for up to 40 guests.
We know there will still be folks who miss out on the nightly meals, and we’re hopeful and curious to see what this incredible community might create next to help fill those gaps, but for now, this chapter of the qCEH Meal Train comes to a close.
Thank you, truly, from the bottom of our hearts (and bellies) to those who’ve contributed, whether it be once, or weekly! The care, consistency, and connection you brought to this effort has meant everything. Meeting new people, sharing ideas and showing up alongside y’all has been the best part.
We, qathet Coalition to End Homelessness will continue to exist beyond the meal train, and even without the clubhouse space when we move out in May (maybe a bit tired, but still inspired). We look forward to scheming up the next meaningful project.
In solidarity, and with deep gratitude,
qCEH

We’ve committed to keeping the community meal train going until the temporary shelter opens. That said, there are some open dates on the calendar for meals; snacks and serving! Take a peek if you can and share the link! 🔗 thank you all! ❤️ let’s finish what we started !

The only emergency shelter in qathet is now closed, (as of March 26th 2025). Not only does this mean folks are without a place indoors to be, sleep, and take shelter from the elements, it means the meals they had received through the shelter are also gone. Let's come together and show our community....

IMPORTANT UPDATES RE: MEAL TRAIN!

Over the past year, thanks to the generosity of you all, we have prepared and shared home-cooked meals and snacks nearly every day for 20- 30 people. Wow! What began as a short-term response grew into a daily commitment made possible by an incredible community of cooks, donors, volunteers, old, and new friends showing up to care for one another.

As we approach early April, we wanted to share an important update. With the upcoming opening of the temporary 40-bed emergency shelter, the qathet Coalition to End Homelessness is preparing to transition away from hosting nightly meals at the Clubhouse. The hope is that the new temporary shelter will be a safe place for many in our community (and this includes dinner for those accessing the shelter). During the past year of this meal train experience we saw just a sliver of the food insecurity that exists for many people in this community, sometimes directly linked to housing instability, affordability, disability, or other reasons. We are aware some of our neighbours will be missing out on access to food and connection when the nightly Clubhouse meals end. That said, our hope is to refocus the Coalition’s energy toward determining the next phase of our work. Recognizing that while the temporary emergency shelter is necessary, we know that long-term shelter living is not the goal — autonomy and stability are.

We will let you know when the last nightly Clubhouse meal will be. Please keep an eye on the calendar as we navigate through this transition and provide further updates as we know them.

As we transition, we will be moving away from accepting most clothing, towel, and bedding donations (but could still accept sleeping bags or good jackets for the time being). We will continue to accept ready to go snacks and beverages until the nightly meals end. The qCEH laundry fund still exists at the Westview Laundromat for folks to donate to, which supports folks still outside in getting their laundry done efficiently (or at all).

As we prepare for this shift, perhaps some of you may wish to continue the spirit of community meals in new ways. (That would be our dream!) If you’re interested in being part of a group to explore ongoing meal support or want to help coordinate something new, please email us at: [email protected]

We'll help compile a list so that someone (or a few folks!) can step forward to carry this important work onward.

Thank you for every meal made, snack dropped off, and moments of care shared this past year. Together, we’ve accomplished something pretty amazing and experienced some great community along the way.

VOLUNTEER CALLOUT: PLEASE SHARE WIDELY!

With some very cold nights coming quickly and snow in the forecast for next week we are looking for some late night volunteers to call on in the event of the Clubhouse needing to stay open from 6pm - midnight. If you are able to do a portion of the evening but not all that is still helpful.

Please specify the dates & times you might be available when contacting us. We do not have exact dates since we won't know what the weather will be doing until the days get closer but likely around/ between December 31st - January 6th.

We encourage everyone to contact us if you are interested, and especially people with first aid training + experience responding.

Thanks in advance everyone ❤️

There is a staff report exploring extreme weather response planning and use of city owned spaces to operate extreme weather warming centers or shelter on this weeks Committee of the Whole meeting on Tuesday December 16th. To sum up the report: the new shelter will open at the end of February 2026, there were no city owned spaces for EWR warming spaces, and no plan. Youth CAT has put out a call to action.
